hello there, i don't know if i should have asked this in the hardware forum but here goes:
i swapped my AMD Duron 950MHz for a XP2400+. i've since found out however that my system doesn't fully support it. i intend to take the XP out and install it straight into a new system, then put the old Duron back in my current machine.
What i am unsure about is if i need to apply heatsink compound to the either processor while installing them.
I guess i should with the Duron because it is over a year old and has been sitting in a box for a couple of weeks. The XP though had a piece of tape i removed with thermal solution underneath. If i take it out of one motherboard and install imediately into a new motheroard do i still need to apply fresh heatsink compound?

Yes but AMD does not recommend compound for there processors nor will they warrenty your product if you use it. PLS check there site for there recomendations. (personally I use it with there products) but you should be warned of there recommendations..

Not meaning to tell you to suck eggs but have you checked with your motherboard manufacturer to see if there is a BIOS flash upgrade that will allow your board to support the 2400 chip. There are implications with flashing your BIOS so please post back before doing it.

I would definitely put some new thermal compound on the chip if I were doing it, whether that be Arctic Silver (probably the best choice) or a thermal pad. You can maintain your warranty on the chip with a thermal pad, but it won't cool as well as Arctic Silver. If you do go with Arctic Silver, go to their website and follow the instructions carefully. I use postit notes to frame the contact point on the CPU and protect the rest from spill. I use an old plastic card to spread it very thin and even.

Sheesh,
Thermal pads are a little 'pricey' (http://www.etechwarehouse.com/ProductInfo.asp?v=B8&idProduct=12717624)

$6.95 to ship a few ounces?!? I'm gonna go get a roll of two-sided carpet tape. I'll be independently wealthy in no time...

cheers for the advice guys. i already did upgrade my BIOS but the motheroard website is unclear about what processors it supports. its a long story and i've had a lot of problems with this and i definately need a new power supply because the current one is only 300W, not enough for the XP's apparently. ultimately its easier for me to build a new system and keep the old one how it is because i know it works.
anyway thanks for the help.

Depending on what extra's you have hooked to the machine 300w is plenty for what you have.

my system won't boot properly so i contacted AMD and i recieved an email saying i needed at least 350W PSU for the XP processor.
