As far as I know, a reinstall is in your future. Wait for those more experienced than I to confirm or offer alternatives.
I got so bad at this, that now I have one password that I use for everything.

are you using *grub* or *lilo*?
if *lilo* you might try Rebooting the comp.(CTRL+ALT+DEL)
At LILO key in linux S (you may need to press CTRL+X to get to the text based LILO prompt). Once it loads up and asks for a password at (Bash prompt) type *passwd* to set new password for root..type exit to reboot???
or try
To reset the root password:
Get a rescue boot disk.
Slackware works nice, Mandrake 8 cdrom will boot into a rescue mode by
pressing F2 and then 'rescue' at boot prompt. Most all distros have
some kind of rescue boot.
Mount up your root partition at the rescue prompt.
`mount /dev/hdaX /mnt` (I hope you know what partition your root is)
Delete the root password:
Edit the /mnt/etc/passwd and remove the root password.
If you use shadow passwords there will jut be a 'x' the the password
field. You should also edit and delete the password from the
/mnt/etc/shadow file.
Reboot, login as root (there is no password), set a new root password.
