Hi, I have this old Gateway 2000 PC running Win 95. Memory is 16 MB and I want to upgrade it. I have two pairs of 72 pin EDO RAM cards ( 8 & 16 MB)but it will not boot at all with these. Is there some way to install these EDO cards?
Thanks for any info. Bob (in UK)

Edo RAM can be tricky with parity and non-parity and dual parity flavors. If you know what your board takes, it will give you a better idea of what you need. I worked on an old system that required one type and the RAM sticks didn't indicate what they were, so I ended up with dual parity sticks.

Windows 95 might not work with http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html EDO RAM based boards are sensitive to several parameters. Let's just assume you have one of the more recent... Try the link, if the program doesn't work, there's other ways to figure out an upgrade. Just let us know :)
I've put 128megs pc66 EDO RAM in a system that stated 64 as being the max. Didn't try (yet) to go beyond...
This 'old Gateway' got a name? IE model #?

Here is a link to buy the RAM. (http://www.directron.com/gw8327.html) You may also be able to find out from them what type it is. One of the other Google hits for that computer referred to "proprietary memory", so I suspect you won't be able to use standard EDO RAM in that antique...

That RAM is fairly cheap isn't it. I won't purchase it just yet though ... if only I wasn't so mean .... :) Suppose it's an antique but not a highly collectable item just yet!
