Hi, please help before the wife kills me,

I have a Gigabyte GA-7DXR with an Athlon 1500+

I recently brought for an upgrade a second stick of pc 2100 256 MB RAM and a Server Tower to place my kit in.

All has been running fine for a week until this morning.

I was given a cpu fan for a pentium 4 which obviously wont fit my athlon so I took the fan off the p4 heatsink and as the screw did not aline I "superlued" it in place.

And guess what, when I went to boot up NOTHING!

I have removed items bit by bit while testing, I even have a new PSU, the present situation is that the motherboard is out of the case with only the pair of wires from the switch connected and the power from the psu.

NOTHING !

I have even removed the switch lead and shorted the pins on the board for the power switch and

NOTHING !!!!

Not even the fan turning on the psu.

Before I condemn the board and have to wait till I can afford another anyone have any thoughts.

Many many thanks.

:(

Well I did somthing similar, with out the superglue, I did the fan heatsink bit and when I went to boot zipoooo nada---Well I did get a video card logo on the monitor and that was it--I went in without a groung strap[ 40 years an electrician] and the long and short of it was I fried the CMOS with a static electric charge---A new motherboard and all was well----

Your situation sounds like a processor, if your getting nothing, is there power from the power supply ?????

Did you spill any glue on the modo? shorting the mobo.

I'd go back to the old fan. That was the last thing you did before it died. Even if you had to buy a new HS and fan (amd approved) it would be worth a try.

can someone just confirm that with the board out nd nothing connected apart from the switch and pu) that i should still get the psu fan to turn.(not even ram and cpu) I get diddly squat!!!!

Nope, can't confirm that. The ATX board and power supply interact, so if the board is not letting the power supply know that it is ok to power up, the fan may not come on. If it is indicating that there is something there, the fan will probably come on and other fans may as well, even though the computer is still dead.

No one should be without a copy of my Diagnostic Charts.
I keep falling back on them for help.
If anyone wants a copy they should send me a PM requesting them [zipped or not] and giving an e-mail address to send them to.

Here’s what they say on this topic.
STARTUP
1. Is the PC dead? Yes.
2. Go to the SYSTEM chart.

SYSTEM
1. The PC is “Dead”. Does the PSU fan run? If it doesn’t then:
2. Are the PSU voltages correct? If yes, then the fan is faulty. If not then:
3. Disconnect all peripheral’s adaptors and the system board.
4. Does the fan now run? If not the POWER SUPPLY MAY BE FAULTY. Go to the POWER SUPPLY chart.
[I’ll omit the rest of this chart since it doesn’t apply]

POWER SUPPLY [David Eaton’s chart]
1. PC dead, no fans, no lights.
2. Is the main power supply ok? I’ll assume it is.
3. Is the power lead ok? I’ll assume it is.
4. Short the switch connections on the motherboard.
5. Does the PC run? If it does the switch is faulty. Replace and re-test. If not then:
6. Remove motherboard connector & short the green and [black?(check this)] wires.
7. Does the fan now run? If it does, then the motherboard is faulty. Replace the motherboard or leave the connection in place. If the fan does not run the PSU is faulty. Replace it and re-test.
