Hi,

My HDD is a seagate 17.2GB.. It was working fine one day..... and the next when I tried to start my computer, it just doesn't read.. In fact it is not even being detected.. I tried to detect it on quite a few other systems but nothing!!! Please, It looks like nothing can be done, but you guys out there are geniuses..... If any one can help its you all. I have some really important data in there.. Thanx in advance..

Regards,

Ali Akbar.

I can think of a few things.....

Is it being detected in the BIOS, if not make it search for it automatically.

Check the jumper settings at the back of your hard drive, They could be missing or layed out incorrectly.

Download the Seagate hard drive utils and run from floppy to check drive.

Hi,

I did do all this.. And the jumper settings are fine.. i not only tried it as the Primary Master but also as the Primary Slave and Secondary Master... Nothing works.. but yes.. I will download the Seagate utils and check but I think that the Media Card has gone bad....... would it help if i arranged a same model Seagate HDD and replace the Media card?? I dont want to do this without checking it out...... In case any possibility of it being repaired just goes out of the window!!!

Thanx again.. U fellows.

sounds nakkered to me.. i'd take it away to a pc shop and let them have a look at it if software or we can't solve the problem... It must be something to do with the disk inside the hard drive... but know one knows because no-one can see it lol :D

Good Luck... i can't help much more.

chad :)

There is a good chance it is dead, but it is possible that you can recover the data on it if it is important enough to you. Repairing it is likely to cost you more than the drive is worth. Recovering the data will cost several hundred dollars. If you have a backup and don't have to recover anything else from the drive, I would urge you to start shopping for a new one unless the Seagate diagnosis shows something is still working. You can buy a new drive these days for less the $1/gig. If the diagnostic software shows it still works, it is probably a Windoze problem and can be fixed. One other thing: consider trying a different cable since a cable can go bad and they are relatively cheap.

Hi to you guys.....

Well budfred, it is most probably dead.. As far as the cable thing goes.. i did do that.. not only that, i tested it on around 4-5 systems... I guess my data is gone.. I did not have a completely updated backup... I guess this has taught me a lesson.. Anyways, thanx again u guys for ur help... Any other problem that I might encounter i'll be sure to ask ur help.
