He's just playing up for some lobbyist. Proably trying to earn backing for something else dear to his little heart. These guys pop out all the time, so what else is new? :D :D

Hell, when I was a kid I taped all my music right off the radio. Even called a DJ once to have him replay a song and instead of doing that he sent me a tape with all the top 20 songs of the day on it and the song I requested. Don't recall if the boys in DC cared alot about that kind of thing back in the day. :)

This whole bizness of downloading music is all because no one is paying the high prices of CD now days. Lower those prices and folks just might be willing to buy one CD for one track.

Guess the music guys should have keep the 45, or something like it, around a little longer.

Yeah, I saw the same thing here (http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=10062). I especially like the second half of the article.

Personally I think it would be an appropriate punishment for any hacker!!!

PC-Shark,

The problem is that they are not talking about hackers, they are talking about people who download music and other media.

If they were talking about hackers it would be worse. While I would love to be able to remotely destroy the computers of people who run trojans or do other hacking, they often route through the computers of people who don't even know they are being used, so guess whose computer would actually be destroyed????

Granted that I can get almost perfect renditions of almost anything from the web. But I can just as easily record a near perfect MP3 from my local radio station. So the question becomes, what happened to my fair-use rights?

Every possible step is being taken to prevent me from creating backups of my music collections for the purpose of archival protection. Yet no action is taken to ensure that I am not being forced to pay monopolistic prices.

I choose to preview music before I buy it. If the music is decent enough that I can justify paying for it then I go out and buy it. Usually I purchase from one of the few music clubs that I am a member of so that I don't have to pay the outrageous price that I would at the local store. And I don't mean that I preview it for just one listen, or even two. I usally will listen to the music while I am programming and usually I will listen to it for up to a month before I decide if it will fit with all of my various moods.

I will never purchase self-destructive music. I will use the law to enforce my legal rights to any and all property that I own. This includes software, etc. I have spent more money on shareware or software that I could preview before purchasing than I have on things that I can't preview.

Do I feel guilty for doing so...Nope. Do I think it's right for someone to preview my software without permission...Nope. Will this cause me to use some draconian method to protect my software...Nope.

Truth is, if I could purchase it for one-half or one-quarter of what it costs at this point I would be more likely to buy it. Would this increase the profits by lowering the price, possibly.

Consider this...

Software X costs $400.00 retail
Software X costs $10.00 per copy to create
Software X sells 100 copies resulting in $39000 profit

Software Y costs $100.00 retail
Software Y costs $10.00 per copy to create
Software Y sells 500 copies resulting in $49000 profit

It's not guaranteed, but it is more likely that you would have more people willing to purchase the software if it was cheaper. And many would have no problem paying for extra licenses if the cost was low enough. Say, purchase 1 copy at $100, get 2 licenses and each additional license is $25.

hmmm...Orrin Hatch wants the government to destroy our computers if we do something wrong. I wonder if that means that we could destroy government computers if THEY did something wrong....:p

I don't think that is his intent, but it could certainly become the consequence if they go ahead with this plan. Every potential hacker out there would finally have a specific target instead of just being angry with the world...

I have not and dont care to download any music, but now that I know Orrin Hatch is a singer, well that changes everything.

Didn't know if anyone had noticed, but it seems a bored sysadmin did some snooping on the good Senator's website.

Seems he found pirated code.

And a link to a porn site.

Darn. Can anyone say IRONY?

You can see the details here (http://slashdot.org/articles/03/06/20/0046237.shtml?tid=103&tid=185&tid=99).

I love it. I only wish I were the the programmer who can write this stuff. I consider the whole music download subculture to be nothing more than a bunch of petty thieves, ripping off the gyrating and hormone-sick morons that pass for artists nowadays. I hope this war between record companies and N-sync fans escalates, and the carnage deprives both sides of all kinds of money whilst making some talented hacker somewhere filthy rich.

Oops. Hold on a sec. Lemme get my popcorn...

This is the second forum I have seen this on. This crap seriously chaps my behind. HOW CAN THIS FOOL GET AWAY WITH EVEN SAYING THIS OUT LOUD. Where were his handlers?? What was the sound man doing? With any luck at all, this should be the last we see or hear from these narrow minded control freaks we call politicians.
What if Hatch were a traffic cop on the side? Would he get away with saying “Anyone who runs a red light should have his or her car destroyed”.
How about in the DEA? “Your house will be destroyed if you grow a pot plant in your yard”.

But I guess this is more about theft then anything:
How about we destroy your closet for shoplifting?
Or cut off your hands for pick pocketing?
Hell, why don’t we just insert electric probes into the brains of thieves and shock them into slobbering, self-soiling morons for even thinking about stealing. That ought to teach them.

The fact that so many people backpedaled by saying “That’s not what he really meant” just shows they are a little nervous about backlash. I hope he gets a tremendous slap in the face politically for this.

OK, off the soapbox Frank

The big question is not whether or not people deserve to have their computers destroyed if they share files, but the way in which this is done. First off, what Hatch is proposing is a violation of the 5th ammendment, which guarantees due process. Also, what happens if someone who isn't actually downloading files, has their computer destroyed "accidently"

what we should do is just vote them out of office. as for the music and movie industries all you have to do. is start a world wide boycott of the products for two to three months.don't buy a music cd or go to the movies.they think we are just a bunch of sheep to be pushed around.i'm a copyright holder of my grandfathers music. the music they put out today all sounds the same.when i was a teenager i used to go into the music man and listen to the 45's or lps before i would buy them.you can not do that today. you open it you bought it.as for copy protected dvds they can keep them. i bought two of them because i could not see the printed words. they were so small and blended in with the back ground.i used my reading and 20 times magnifier to find it. i put the dvds in my putter to play them and they would not play. i then put a dvd in that i knew would play, and it also would not play.reinstalled win dvd still the same. if i want to watch movies on my putter i have to reformatt c drive.i wonder what code they put in to disable windvd. i know i can play it on my tv. but it sounds better on my putter. no surround sound or 6.1 on tv. so every once in awhile i like to watch it on the 21 inch.fair use is fair use, they get x amount per blank cd dvd we buy. they never play fair. boycott boycott

You might want to run Spybot and see if Cdilla comes up... If so delete it...

Did anyone see Tech Live on tech tv last night. There was a lot of discussion on that after the show in the chat room. For example the morality of it all and is stealing ok? I have not purchased a CD for 3 years. When I did I'd get around 5-6 a year. Think of the money they lost from me downloading instead of buying cd's and multiply that by the number of P2P downloaders. Also I refuse to pay $20 for 2-3 songs that I like on a 20 track cd.

the thing that the music industry refuses to accept is that when the economy is in terrible shape and millions of people are out of work, or about to go out of work, people are not going to pay $18 for a CD with three songs that they like. If they just got smart and started a good internet purchase service, like the apple music store, where there was a no strings attatched download for a set fee, people would stop pirating as much music as they do. Obviously it wouldn't stop everyone, but many people, myself included would pay a small fee for a track they knew was good quality. Its the Music Industry that needs to get smart.

He's doing this because hes with Bush and we are stealing from the rich people who supposedly pay most of the taxes and strengthen our economy...He needs to get with the system and do his polotics instead of worrying about hackers all day long...

:D It is a funny idea having all the hackers aiming at US Government Computers though....:D

Excuse my mirth, for just a second. If this is a good service, then this culture's music must be very, very shallow indeed...

keep in mind that these rich people generally pay a much lower percentage of the taxes because of nifty tricks by their accountants.
