recently whilst browsing free porn sites I came across my first browser hijacker. It tried to open up an external window with a dialing address and then tried to minimize or hide the window. Fortunately I have spyware blaster and I think that is why it didn't work. However I also found a webpage had placed a trojan on my computer and AVG antivirus picked it up in the adaware cache as I was using adaware to scan for spyware too. I then deleted all my temporary files through the IE delete temp files button. The AVG alert previously said to run a complete antivirus test, so I did that but no trojans were found. Could the apparent trojan have been put into temp files and been wiped when I deleted the temporary files through the IE settings?? Also, in MJC's list of free antivirus, anti-spyware apps etc, there is only one anti-trojan utility (Swat-It) which has not had an updated signature available for about 12 months!! Do u know of any other free anti-trojan applications which get continually updated with new signatures??

Go to http://www.panicware.com and download Pop-up Stopper.

If you go tot the download page there is a FREE version.

When installed set it to agressive. Very good and effective at stopping popups. It can be maually over-ridden if needed. Also do not need set it to run at bootup but keep shortcut handy to click when you go on line.

Daniel-man....yep Swatit is the only freebie, but GAV is a very good secondary/backup scanner (it is an advanced beta...very stabil but not quite finished (like real time scanning is not enabled, on demand scan only), TH and TDS both have free trials.

AV companies are muddying the waters somewhat by calling a number of these parasites trojans.

Also MJC, I was just wonering how spyware blaster works?? I assume it works on some kind of installing thing rather than only working active when I have the program open?? Does it install some sort of rule in internet exporer to block certain dialers and hijackers??

GAV=Gladiator AntiVirus

TDS=Trojan Defense Suite

Both are listed in my AV links in my sig.

Spywareblaster is a one shot deal (except for running it occasionally to update its database). It sets the kill bit for ActiveX items. With the kill bit set it is impossible for those items to run. So it only prevents ActiveX based spyware...which is the bulk of it, not all of it.
