View Full Version : Laptop to PC connection

I have old IBM 560 thinkpad :(
The problem is that it has a floppy drive which does not work.
It has a non-working cd-rom drive. So, i am left with nothing to
connect external world. So, I was thinking if I would connect
laptop to my pc using serial port.

I have tried once but did not succeed in transferring data.
The problem could be either in my pc or laptop but when i run
diag on laptop it goes fine.

If anyone had a experience in this that would be very helpful.

Are you using a NULL Modem adapter or cable ?

it is required for that connection

I am not an expert ... so let me put in my own language.

I took a cable which has serial ports on both ends.
I opened the connector on end side and swapped tx and rx pins.

I had the same thing happening with an 1bm 600 laptop and my desktop. My advice would be to go online to ebay and purchase a network card for the laptop. Then just get a hub (and a card for your desktop if it doesnt already have one) and set up a LAN with your two computers connected.

What about IrDA? If you have IrDA port in your notebook then you could use this to transfer the data. You could by USB_IrDA converter for your desktop. Once I had problem to transfer data with parallel cable then I switched to IrDA which solved the problem.

That wont work very well, IrDA is a pretty slow connection

Fast IrDA could have speed up to 400Mbps which is comparable to USB2.0 thouh actual transfer speed might be slower. If there is no other way then why not IrDA?

IrDA is one of the options. As sharanbasappa had problem with direct cable connection, he could try one option after another starting from the cheapest or simplest option until he succeds.

the best & cheapest route would be to get a PCcard NIC & a crossover cable-no need for a hub. Then he caould transfer files willy-nilly to his hearts content.
