Hi Everybody,
I have a question about an antivirus I've heard somewhere in these forums: AVG. Can anyone tell me if it's a good one, even in comparison To McAfee (which is installed on my own PC) and Norton?
Is it a good thing to get them both installed and run one each time?
Thank in advance 4 your replies...:)

The biggest advantage to AVG is that it is free and the others are not. It also runs a little less bloated than either McAfee or Norton. I have Norton and it has been causing a number of problems lately. Tech support has been only minimally helpful.

I have only used AVG, so cannot really compare with other AV software. However, as Budfred said, AVG is free, and the updates are free. I believe that my uncle recently had to pay to get updates again from Norton. I like AVG, it's never given me any problems whatsoever with 98 or 98SE..and did I mention the "free" part...??:D Seriously, I think whenever possible we should encourage freeware developers, and I did pay for a year's worth of tech support on AVG a couple of years ago when I downloaded it. Never needed any tech support.

Same here.
I seldom experience any infection but AVG caught an attempt at worm infection via an e-mail.
It updates automatically and never gives any trouble.
I tested it with fake viruses and it did a pretty good job at quarantining them.
I particularly like the "Rescue Disk" that makes a backup of the HDD Partition Sector and will rebuild it in the event of corruption.

Well talk of the Devil and he appears.
I've just received a slightly odd e-mail with an attachment.
I decided to save the attachment to a floppy, then write protect it and scan it with AVG.
But as I tried to save it AVG reported that this was the "Bugbear" worm and refused to save it.
I deleted the e-mail and AVG reported it had been quarantined in the "Virus Vault".
I sent a warning to the apparent sender, but then I discovered this worm fakes the senders address.
I got a report back saying something about the sender not accepting mail.

I've been using AVG for a while, what particularly impressed me was when I was formatting some old floppies that I had aquired from someone.
Upon clicking on floppy disc a big red warning flashed on the screen saying 'VIRUS', made me jump & nearly fell off my chair. but AVG wouldn't let me do anything with my pc until the virus was dealt with.
had McGaffee on before, wasn't impressed.
AVG is uncomplicated, easy to use, easy to update and free. can't get better value than that.

I have used McAffee and Norton in the past and would not give them house room in the dogs kennel.
I have also tried a couple of other free AV softwares but found AVG the easiest to use. AVG (free) is a good AV program and has caught a couple of viruses that have come my way.

Me too AVG have save my *** from a couple or more viruses already so I'm glad that there are free AV programs that good.:D

ok, i'll download it and use it together with McAfee and Zone Alarm
Just make sure that you only have one of the AVs set to do background scanning...otherwise you will have major problems.

Could you please explain me why?
Thanx
Two AV programs background scanning at the same time use too many resources, often the interfer with each other's scans, and sometimes just crash one or both programs.

If you have any 2 programs running background and trying to do the same thing at the same time, both calling on the CPU for priority and insisting that they have the right of way... you are going to have problems. Imagine 2 cars trying to merge into the same lane at the same time in the same place.... OUCH!
Edit: and what mjc said, got that in there while I was writing...

I was on the internet the other day and a website must've dropped a trojan or something onto my computer because AVG suddenly popped up and said theres a trojan and it had been virus vaulted. I've looked through the virus vault and logs and still can find nothing at all about this trojan that occured. I'm not exactly sure why AVG did not log it but it means it could still be somewhere on my computer, hidden from AVG.

Re-format the C: drive and restore a clean backup taken before this seeming problem appeared.
Even if there had been a Trojan somewhere on the system, now it won’t exist any more.
