I have been using Winfax basic that came with norton system works 02. Now ow I want to install winfax pro but it would not load unless the basic version is uninstalled. I have uninstalled the dam think but on installing The Pro it still says there is a older version on the pc that needs to be removed.
I searched and deleted every possible winfax file samt thing. I now see that there is a file in my windows/system32 directory with a .dll extention that dould not be deleted. This may be becaused both the windows & system32 directoeies are read only.

Somebody help me out here! Please

switching a directory from read only to read/write isn't that hard I think, just have a peek in the properties of those folders and there should be a switch or button or check box handling this. (or maybe just the files are read only? Well, same rules apply on file level...)

However, from what I know about this kind of problem (not much), it might be registered-related, like when you delete a program manualy instead of uninstalling it. Should this be the case, bigger brains than mine will be needed 'cause I know verry little about registry-stuff :D

well I did do the uninstall then erease files that where left. AS for the changing the properites. I did switch the directories from being read only but they just switch back to read only when I ok the properities box. So I cannot delete this file and I think it is what the Pro version is reading and thinking that the Basic is still loaded.

Comeone someone must have encountered this and fixed it.

What did you use to uninstall. The best best is usually to use the one included in Norton since it should ferret out all the references and remove them. If you didn't do that before, try reinstalling the old version and then uninstalling it from Norton. If that still doesn't work, I would try the FAQs on the Norton website since I am sure they have had this issue before. You could also run a Registry cleaner to get rid of traces of the program in the Registry.

Sounds like you are running XP/2k...have you tried the uninstall as admin?

The sys folders being read only sounds like you are logged in as a user with lesser priveleges.

doing Budfred's suggestion of reinstalling and uninstalling may need to be done as admin too.

How to uninstall WinFax Basic Edition manually

Situation:
You want to know how to manually uninstall WinFax Basic Edition version 9.0 or 10.0.

Solution:
If you want to keep your existing data, you should back it up before uninstalling WinFax.

NOTE: Occasionally, if a file, folder, or registry entry is in use when you attempt to remove it or change it, Windows does not allow the change. If this problem occurs, restart the computer into Safe mode to perform the removal or deletion. See the document How to start the computer in Safe mode.

6. Repeat for the \Cover folder if you have any custom cover pages.

NOTE: When copying these folders, make sure that the location is not within the Symantec folder.
