I am trying to make outlook express the default email program to use in explorer but it won't give me the option to do so. The pull down box is empty in the internet Options/Program setup. This is keeping me from being able to email directly from the internet - i.e. I can't click on an email address and send a message. How do I get explorer to recognize the program so that I can set it as the default email program?

Try Resetting Web Settings on the same options page; if that doesn't do it then...

... next thing to check is the URL:MailTo file association under MyComputer>>Tools>>FolderOptions>>FileTypes. Highlight it and click Advanced. Highlight Open and click Edit.

Application used to perform action should be (with your path if not exactly as here):-
"C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe" /mailurl:%1

Use DDE should be checked.

Application = msimn

Topic = System.

Let us know how you get on. I have known installing Outlook from Office to complicate and corrupt things, such that I always customise the Office SetUp and never let it onto the system to begin with.

EDIT

Also found two more "fixes".
Enter "C:\PROGRAM FILES\OUTLOOK EXPRESS\MSIMN.EXE" /reg in the run box and then go to IE and set it as the default program.

or

Enter regsvr32 urlmon.dll in the run box.

He He :D - or dump OE for a more secure mail client of course ;)

And yet another method:-
Go to OE >> Tools >> Options >> General and click on the Button "Make Default" for "This application is the default Mail Handler". !!

I wanted to thank you for your help. I tried all three options you gave and nothing happened, then I tried the first 2 again and it worked. Strange, I wish I new exactly which one fixed the problem, but I guess that doesn't matter now. Thanks again!:)

Perhaps there was a need for a reboot or for the app to be closed and re-opened. If the first option was showing incorrectly to begin with then that was probably the one - but who knows? :D
