I hope I have this message in the correct list.

I have just downloaded a 31mb demo race game for my young son and when I click on it it gives me this message " __ not a valid win32 application '. Does this mean it will not play on my computer? Is there something I should change for it to work?

My computer is a genuine Pentium III, 600mhz cpu, 20 gig hdd and has Windows98 SE with Plus 98. My system tells me that 16 and 32 bit modules are loaded (if that helps. I do not know much about computers.)
If you need more information please let me know and I will try to find it.

I would hate to think I spent 4 hours downloading for nothing.
I am told that my connection is too slow and too unreliable but I do not know what to do about it.

Please, if you could help me it would be much appriciated.

thank you, Narelle. :)

I can think of several reasons and all of them basically mean the four hours was wasted.

A few questions....

1. Where did you download it from? The manufacturers site?

2. Is it a zip or iso file?

Hi mjc.

I was on this site ' www.microsoft.com/games/midtown2/ ' and I used Go!Zilla and it downloaded from ' download.microsoft.com '. The name of the file is - mm2trial.exe .

thank you

Might be a corrupt download....probably not really thrilled with the idea of doing it over, are you?

Narelle,

If you have a friend who has a high speed line (e.g.,DSL, cable, etc.) and you mutually have a portable media device (e.g., CD, Zip drive, etc.) then maybe he/she could download it much much faster and more successfully and then just copy it to the portable media for you.

Just a thought.:)

mjc, no I'm not thrilled. Since posting my first message i have downloaded a couple of other short[U] games and I get that not valid message with them too. They are all .exe programs. Yet i had no trouble with AVG Free Anti-virus program.

Tommy, Yes i could ask my brother to try.

Thank you both for your help,

narelle

Ok, things are not quite right here......if it was just one file then yes corrupt download or something like that, but not all files.

Please post a HijackThis (http://www.tomcoyote.org/hjt) and post a log.

Also make sure that you have Explorer set to show all file extensions. This can be done by going to the View => Folder Options => View in Explorer and scroll down and unceck "Hide file extensions for known types."

mjc, Hi.

I have checked Explorer and "Hide file extensions for known types"
was already unchecked with "show all hidden files" ticked.

Before you go to too much trouble for me I must say that while GoZilla was downloading I noticed that it was being disconnected a lot from the download sites but as I thought that GoZilla could resume I wasn't too worried about it.

I have since used Getright5 and downloaded mm2trial.exe and it works.
I just started the download and left the computer. With GoZilla I had also gone from website to website while I was waiting for the download to finish. Maybe that had something to do with the corrupt file?

But just the same I am still attatching the log file from HijackThis.
I am going to try those other files that failed with Getright5.

Thank you very much for your help, Narelle

Hey narelle,

I had downloaded a 4 part 400MB each files from Kazza and found out it had said the same error message on all of them when I tried to run them. I still have the files somewhere in my pile of burned CD's. More or less it is a bad file and I think it might be better to have your brother download it and then burn it on a CD for you. Also Midtown is an older game and I would bet you anything that you can find it at your local electronic store or game store for really cheap. If you figure how to fix it, please let me know!

Run HijackThis again and checkmark these items for fixing....

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {1678F7E1-C422-11D0-AD7D-00400515CAAA} - (no file)
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {FE6BC4EF-5676-484B-88AE-883323913256} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WhenUSave] C:\Program Files\Save\Save.exe

Reboot, and then delete this entire folder.....

C:\Program Files\Save\Save.exe

This one doesn't need to run from Startup......

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SMSERIAL] C:\sm56upgrade\sm56hlpr.exe

this one too....
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Desktop Architect] "D:\DESKTOP_ARCHITECT\DATRAY.EXE" -S

They can be disabled using MSconfig.......or better yet HJT.

The good news it that I can find no evedence of trojans or a major adware/spyware infestation. but, nothing all that helpful either.

mjc,

Thank you. I have followed your instructions with HiJackThis and everything went o.k. I was looking for somewhere to turn Save.exe off but what I tried didn't work. I wanted to see what Save.exe did but nothing seemed to happen when I double-clicked on it. It wasn't till I connected to the internet that I saw it trying to get access.

I will use Getright5 for a while and see how I go. If I still have problems I will get back to you again.

Thank you very much for all your help,
Narelle

Matt,

Maybe Midtown Madness is too old because I can't find it in the shops here. I'll have to wait till I go to the city (2 1/2 hrs away).

Thank you,
Narelle
