View Full Version : Strategy games
I used to play Age Of Empires Series a lot.
Lastly i played AOE-Conquerrors.
Is there any new game of this type in the market.
I have a celeron-333 processor with 8MB 3D Card.

Don't play many strategy games myself, but I've heard good things about Medieval Total War. And if that's too much for your present system to handle there is the older Shogun Total War.
Or have you tried any of the Sid Meir games? Civiliztions?
Edit- here is a good online retailer of games, huge stock, all the new ones and many old ones at bargain prices. And they ship worldwide. I've ordered a few from there myself.

I'm into strategy games myself. I really enjoy Star Craft (expansion set) Brood War. I've been playing it for a long time now. I like it more than AOE.

Empire Earth should quench your thirst for awhile. The economic and military aspects are some what the same as AOE. But at the same time they are uniquely different. It is worth the buy.

Age of Mythology is out (Basicly AoE 3, but microsoft refuses to call it that). It doesnt look like you would need a great comp to run it either.
Empire earth looks good.
Never played it but Warcraft looks good (mix between strategy and RPG i think, although it is part 3d and part 2d)

My personal Rise of Nations review :
Name : Rise of Nations
Type : RTS
Rating : 5/5 stars
Comments: EXCELLENT GAME! I think it would deffinetly beat out and of the Command and Conquer game. The demo in PC gamer magazine sold me on it. RECCOMENDED!!!!!!
So as you can see it is an EXCELLENT! game. If you like Real time Strategy.:D :D

Wait hold on I looked back and I don't think you'll be able to play it. It requires DirectX 9.0 and 128-256 MB RAM. Try the demo to see if it will work.

Yeah, Rise of Nations is nice if you play it on a comp with at least 64mb of vid card memory(won't run nice if its any lower). Also the processor should be at least 1ghz and 256mb of ram is the minimum.
So Akif, you're better off with those AOE games, until you can get a more powerful comp.
PEACE :D

Anither great strategy game but is turned based is CIV III. Also WarCraft III and it's Expansion which recently came out. I think you should stick to Age of Mythology. It will run on your PC rather well.

Saddly, I don't think you will be able to do any of the newer games. Empire Earth is a GREAT game but it needs a better video card, more RAM and faster CPU, basically an all round better machine. Imagine building a fleet with aircraft carriers launching F-14 Tomcats! B-52s dropping nukes!
StarCraft may work and maybe Conquest:Frontier Wars if you go for lower vid settings. I would be very surprised indeed if Warcraft III ran at all.
Conquest demo is here: http://conquest.ubi.com/demo.php

Akif,
Forget all of those games except Civilisation. Try them all, Civ, Civ II and Civ III. (Don't get Civ: Test of time)
I also recommend, www.the-underdogs.org (http://www.the-underdogs.com) for older games - available for free download.
Master of Magic by Microprose is brilliant, but you might need to tweak your memory settings to get it to run (it's that old!)
The playability on these older games is incredible.
D :)
hi to all
Coming back to an old thread!
As i have recently upgraded my pc to 2GHz Celeron with Intel 865 board,
I think now i can run most(if not all) of the suggested games.
I was planning to buy "Rise of nations" , but recently one of my friends told that "Strong Hold" is the best.

Heya Akif,
I have played both, neither actually held me for too long, although Rise of Nations is very good. Stronghold is ok, but certainly not a great game IMHO. (Although the dog cages are pretty cool - you get to lay defences for your castle - stronghold - and these include tar pits, spike traps and guard dog cages)
I will keep harping on about Master of Magic until some of you play it, has to be the best game ever. It is like Civilisation (the first one) but with magic and fantasy creatures, amazing.
Another GREAT strategy game is called Starchamber. It is an online game (although you can play against the computer). You go online and play against human players, only 2 player at the moment, but still a BRILLIANT game.
I recommend playing at least the first two tutorials, I didn't actually play the third one myself. (Probably why I'm rubbish at the game!)
Download it at www.starchamber.net - it's free, at least you can play trial games for free, which is exactly the same as the full game except you only get a couple of maps I think.
Anyway, let me know if you download it and I'll give you a load of free cards. (It's a cross-between a CCG, a board game and a computer game)
D!!!!
Dangerous,
the games u suggested might be very goood.
But i have a problem; I just hate "Fantasy"
Incorporating simplicity (bit deviation from reality) in a game for the sake of enjoyment is something else.
Thats why I hate "Age OF Mythology" but like its pre-decessor "Age of Empires"
Anyway, thnx for ur suggestions.
My brother has bought Strong Hold for me.
I'll check it out when went home.

My current favourite in the Age of Empires series is the Star Wars one, 'Galactic Battlegrounds' - it's based on the Conquerers expansion, but Star-Wars-ified  - bigger tech tree, includes aircraft as well as ground troops - depends whether you dislike SF as much as fantasy!
My kids like Stronghold and Stronghold:Crusader; also Pharoah (easy) and Ceaser III (less so), Seven Kingdoms, Medieval Total War - all similar I believe.
I had a busy weekend (busy in games :) )
Played both "Stronghold" and "Rise of Nations"
My personal view:
Good things of Rise of Nations:
... territory boundaries
... a good span of the "ages"
... a reasonably good "Conquer the world" camapign
Bad things of Rise of Nations:
... Unlimited resources
... lack of commands for a computer ally
... Can't be run on older machines (P-II)
... Diplomacy needs improvement
I haven;t got a chance to play Stronghold much.
Nevertheless, its best thing is that it runs smoothly on my P-II Celeron 333 MHz pc.
Besides, its developers have paid less attention to Graphix than the game itself; this is always good to see.
These days, everyone is running for highly realistic graphics. For action games, it might be a reasonable demand; but not very necessary for strategy games.(atleast IMHO)
I don't know anyone interested in Chess graphics
Cosmin-Coral
did u mean Star Field by SF?
I think i only like to play games closer to reality when playing an RTS.
However, as i liked (and still like) AOE series, i'll try Star Wars ASAP.

Nope, Galactic Battlegrounds (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00006YZ7K/qid=1080404780/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_10_1/026-7673074-0310829).
For what it's worth, it's not Star Wars cannon .
