What does this mean, "is not a valid Win32 application"? It appears to install OK but when they try to run the program this is what they get.

I THINK it means that it is not a Windows program (at least for your version of windows). Could be a DOS or Linux program.

There are many causes for this error message.
eg:-
Corrupted browser.
Corrupted download.
Corrupted file extensions/file associations.
Viral infection.
.... etc.
More details and a bit of Googling might find out the cause.
If it happens when you try to unzip/install...that is usually a corrupted download.
If it happens after the install it can still be a corrupted download...but the others start to come into play.

It's a copy of a program on a CDROM.

I have alway read that -copies- of programs on cd sometimes don't work. When doing aclean install you have to have the orginal program disks and not a copy for it to work. Sounds like the same thing.

Was it copied from a program CD or from a downloaded file from the web? If it is from a program CD, it probably has copy protection that makes it fail.

I wasn't there but I'm sure it was copied from a program CD. But, I don't think it was copied protected.

XP in all it's flavours does it's best to prevent 'illegal copying' it could be that xp is reading the disc as an illegal copy, and sulking.
it's all part of the media player side of things.

Bud got it right, you can't copy a program disk to another disk and expect it to work.
Mark
Before you give up all hope....
Check the file extensions. Make sure that Explorer is set to show all extensions and look at the disk. If it show no or a different extension than what you are expecting...like if it show .dll and you are expecting it to be .exe try renaming it. (on your drive first)

Sorry, but every program I have on disc has been copied for backup and they all work just fine. This particular disc came with two others (they where all barbie programs) and they work fine. mjc, do I open the drive or do I just look at the drive. This is what I see on the drive: BMHSV1 0 E:. The setup file is .exe extension as well as the Autoplay file.
