I recently built a computer with low grade components in an effort to save money. Now as I use it it shuts down out of nowhere repeatedly. I'm thinking the problem must be in the motherboard... if I replaced the motherboard with a higher quality one should that possibly fix the problem? Thanks all....

Hi chrisd9 and welcome to the PC Guide Discussion Forums http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif
The first thing I would do is check the mounting of the mobo at the contact points. Seems like a short in the mobo is the primary suspect. Check your mobo manual regarding the use of stand-offs etc. I would bet this is the prob. After that I would try a diff power supply unit before giving up on the mobo.

i appreciate the response and after looking into it i realize power supply could possibly be the issue.... the case i believe provided a 250 w power supply....... the comp has a burner and is running an 800mhz celeron...... any obvious problems caused there?
thank you again, it's greatly appreciated

I would think that ps would suffice. I still lean heavily on the possibility of a short somewhere on the mobo. Try swapping the ps and let us know how that works http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

Depending on what other components are in the machine, 250W may not be enough. Spontaneous shutdowns are usually related to either heat or power supply, so you're on the right track.

Hi there ,
I'm having the exact same problem where the p.c. spontanously shuts downs. I had a power cut a few weeks ago and since then this has started happening . Previously i had no problems at all. The fans are still going and all the l.e.d.s on the p.c. tower are still on but the vdu shuts down. The reset button on the tower doesn't work , cntrl+alt+del does nothing and the only way to get the p.c. back is to turn the wall socket off and then back on again, sometimes i have to wait sveral hours before it will reboot , or needs several attempts before it will completely open windows without the power cutting. It cuts out at various times from when the pc is booting up to after several hours of use. The pc was bought from retailer 18 months ago and was very reliable up to this point.
I have reformatted the hard disk ( inc using fdisk to del and then create a new partition) and re-installed the factory hard-disk image from cd-rom) and still the problem persists.
It makes sense that the power supply unit needs replaced but i must say i don't know what a mobo is never mind how to check it.
I've ran complete and indepth "norton systemworks" hardware tests and everything comes up okay.
Any help would be much appreciated
yours
Cliff
