Howdy,
Got monitor problems here, this time on my computer.
The monitor is
Samsung, Samtron 75em and 75V plus, both are listed on their site for the same monitor. Made in 2000
The monitor will display correctly in all but 800x600.
In 800x600 there is a rippling effect, a shadow mostly on the right side of the screen scrolls vertically and causes this rippling effect. It is not a solid shadow it is bands of shadow. Reminds me of the 70's when people would talk about walls breathing.
I have :
un-installed and reinstalled video card drivers
looked for updates for drivers for the monitor, nothing after Win98.
been into BIOS and reset to default settings
been through monitor settings,on the monitor itself for refresh rate and degauss.
been into power settings to check for anything wrong there.
Been into video card settings to check there too.
un-installed and reinstalled monitor driver.
Is there anything else I can try?? What have I forgotten??
Thanks very much! LG;)

You could try testing the monitor with diagnostic software run from a floppy.
Try the free version of "Tufftest-Lite" from here
http://www.tufftest.com/free.htm
Follow their instructions to make a diagnostic floppy.
Then just boot with the floppy in the drive and sit back and watch the tests being completed.
If the tests come out ok then there is nothing wrong with your hardware.
The problem lies with the software.
The information supplied with it says it uses machine code.
I'm not clear on the significance of that.
I haven't checked but I believe it does tests at various resolutions including 800 x 600.

Hi Sylvander,
Thanks for the link!! I went there but all three download addresses won't work. Says, the url you have visited does not exist. I'll keep trying, could be their site is having troubles. Thanks again!!
LG;)
Got it Sylvander! Googled it and got it from PC World. Thanks, gonna go try it now. LG;)

You’re right!
What’s their game?
Imagine giving three download addresses and NONE of them work!
If I remember rightly, making the diagnostic floppy was a little tricky, but once made it’s easy to use and works well.

Try here (http://downloads.zdnet.co.uk/downloads/detail/1002-2086-8596189.html)
or
here (http://download.com.com/3000-20-8596189.html?legacy=cnet)
When your monitor is set at 800x600 what does the OSD on the monitor say the frequency response is?

The line starts here to knock LG up side the head and say "DUH"!! :D
Got the download, had a bit of trouble making the disk, something about the image write but kept trying and got it just fine. Ran all the tests, wonderful program, just great!! May even cough up the $10 for the full one! Computer passed with flying colors, thank goodness.
Now for the getting in line part, while waiting for the tests to complete I started really thinking about what had changed, what had I added or taken away to cause this. It suddenly dawned on me that the outside environment could cause funny things too. I had added a small desk fan and had plugged it into the surge protector and had it on the desk blowing gently on the monitor and computer case, heat is such an issue with an AMD setup. Well, goofy here got the bright idea to turn off the fan and what do you know, all problems solved! I could kick myself, fine mess I'm gonna make in a college class if I keep this up.
Any way I'm sure glad to have the program and thank you both so very much for the help. You all can be first in line!!:D
LG;)

Well I don’t think you qualify for a “DUH!” award!
You’re much too smart!
Who’d have thought that a DESK FAN could cause problems with [only] the 800 x 600 resolution display?
Is the fan causing ripples in the electro-magnetic field strength near your monitor and affecting the display?
But why at only 800 x 600 resolution?

My guess (and I deserve a DUH! award when it comes to electrical problems) is the specific frequency at 800x600 was affected by the fan. At other resolutions, the frequency response of the monitor may have been lower or higher and remained unaffected.
Maybe??

I think I'll file that one away in my memory under:
"something strange that needs explained".
