When you choose the startup tab on the msconfig window and you notice that there are things in there that are no longer on your system and haven't been for a long time. How do you edit these things out? Just unchecking them makes sure that even if the program is on there that it won't load but if the program no longer exists I'ed rather not see it listed and checked.

I think there are a couple of ways to do that. The way I am sure of is to track down the program in question and remove it in Add/Remove Software or by another removing program. The other is to use Spybot Search & Destroy. In the Tools section it has a section for Startups and I think it will permanently remove these programs. However, I am not sure because I haven't used it for that purpose.

I am guessing there may be other programs that do the same thing, but I don't know what any are offhand...

Another way is to go into the registry. If you are using Win98 do the following:

Go to run and type REGEDIT then press enter/go

Backup the full registry before doing anything

Open registry and go to
HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Run (check all folders with RUN marked on them)

Now delete the items from here.

You could use the Startup List Tab in “RegCleaner” to remove these.
Download “RegCleaner” from:
http://www.webmasterfree.com/regcleaner.html
For instructions on using “RegCleaner”, go to:
http://www.idf50.co.uk/dm30.htm

I know this works in WINDOWS 98
1. Either that or you could manually delete the entries from the Registry.
2. Or from the “C:\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup” folder.
[Startup programmes are run by putting values in various Registry locations or in the Startup folder.]

1. The values in the Registry are normally in:
The “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Cur rentVersion\Run” key.
Or the “RunServices” key at the same location.
[You could search the Registry for the “Run” key.]
When you untick an item in the “msconfig” Startup tab then the value in these keys are moved to disabling keys.
The “Run” disabling key is named “Run-“ [I think].
The “RunServices” disabling key is named “RunServicesEx” [I think].
[You will see them side by side.]
After you untick them in “msconfig” they will have moved to the disabling keys.
This makes it obvious that the values you are about to delete in the disabling keys are indeed the correct ones to delete.
I’ve done it this way myself and never had any problems.

2. Programs run from the startup folder [If I remember correctly] are moved to a disabling folder [named something like “StartupDisabled”] when you untick them in “msconfig” Startup tab. You simply delete the shortcut in this folder.

thanks guys. I know that on some machines that i've worked on, that when the programs are disabled they do show up in a programs folder simply named disabled programs. I think that the program download mentioned will work great. Don't mind at all working in the registry but if there is a dependable program that will do it for you why bother with it. Thanks again for the info. Craig

On that same startup tab in msconfig, do you see a "cleanup" button near to bottom? I know ME has it, 98 does not, not sure about xp. It's the easiest (not necessarily the best) way to go.

There is also a small freeware program called 'CodeStuff Starter' that has an option for total removal. I have used it and it is OK.

One of my favorite startup managers is Startup Control Panel (http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml), small, easy to use and does just what it needs to do, stays out of the way on the Control Panel....
