included reinstalling several microsoft updates; i run 98se and when i go to Microsoft Updates scan for updates homepage, it lists no security/ critical update patches are available, insinuating the patches are successfully installed. . . is there any logical process here, do i have the update patches somewhere in memory, and can simply reaccess those files and reinstall?

all help is appreciated. . .

Hi there Bridgeofjedge
Not sure if I have understood you correctly.

When installing updates in W98, with files stored on your computer or a seperate disk all you have to do is click (double click) onto the file and, if it is for your version of windows it will install.

If it about downloading updates/patches for W98 then MS is / has stopped supplying W98 updates - security or otherwise.

Not quite, Ernie...98 got another repreive...until Dec, I think. Plus the old ones will still be there, just no new ones after the final date...whenever that will be :D

bridgeofjedge, if you ran the updates from locally stored files, and WinUpdate says they are instlled and doesn't offer them to you, then, most likely they were successfully installed.

Type QFECHECK in the run box...that should list the successful updates.

Cannot find QFECHECK or one of it's components... make sure path, filename and libraries are correct in similar wording. ??? I know I have several patches installed though.

thanks for the replies; when running the QFECHECK, i receive the listing of updates (three boxes, w98., w98.se, win98.se, each with inflate-boxes) on registry-files. . . several list a large red (portentuous) 'X' on the side of several update listings, while another inflation file states 'INVALID' at the end of the file-name. . . i checked the help section (this tool is amazing; no idea i had this little ditty in my OS; i am new to this so mercy please!), read through, and understand vaguely how to use the update file-search; just a matter from there of using the installation.exe file of each individual update, i suppose?

thank you each for your replies. . . please, if given the chance, roam through utilities and applications, or on this forum under the title "hdd lock-up error. . ." and see if you can offer any advice; i attempted (using MS-DOS prompt) the "unlock c:" command, which only brough back the reply "LOCKING OPERATION FAILED". . . i am at a complete loss, and have installed/ ran Norton Processes, listing all processes running, and nothing seems outta the ordinary (other than DDHelp.exe, to which i am clueless of its function and have been told that if i didn't install/ or understand the function of a file/ application, do not touch. . . logical advice i figured.); ive also picked up kill-it-all program, but remain quite apprehensive of running her. . .
anyway, this is a different thread and i apologize for the tangent. . . merci encore. . .
