After running ok for about one day, my newly assembled (Athlon 1.4/DDR/Gigabyte 7DXR) system shut down accompanied by an electrical burning odor. After inspection revealed no apparent cause, system would not re-start. Replaced power supply but CPU fan is inoperative, case LED's inoperative, no video nor bios beepcodes. Installed processor on another motherboard and not one of the three hard drives is recognized and both the CDrom and DVD are inoperative although properly connected and powered. Original power supply (340 w) still inoperative. System not overclocked and no apparent cooling problems.
Is this some massive power supply failure that damaged the hardware?
Any insight will be appreciated!
Any thunder storms overnight?
I'm thinking lightning or massive power surge...anything else in the house acting funny? Like clocks or other appliances that won't work properly?

Nope, no thunderstorms. The system is on a UPS/surge protector..one moment it was fine, the next it just died! No weird stuff with appliances or anything else.
You have started swapping the components to another machine for testing?
And they aren't working in it?
Sounds like either the power supply went and took everything with it or there was a surge that took out the ups. A couple of months ago a storm took out my in-laws mode (so I thought)...the surge protector on the ups did its job, but it was fried and wouldn't let them connect. Have you tried by-passing the ups?

UPS is OK but power supply is dead, it will not work on another MOBO which is OK, nor will the HD's, DVD and CDR! work on another MOBO with another power supply which is OK. Do you think it possible for the new power supply to have failed and taken evrything with it? I did check the video card, thogh, and it seems ok on the other MOBO but the 3 HD's, DVD, CDR, MOBO and CPU are toast. Weird........
Quite possible and it looks like it might be everthing that uses the 12V leg of the PSU that is dead....
One more question, what CPU cooler did you use?
