I have a Packard Bell Club 79 with a 64 voices stereo sound chip. Recently my VDU crashed and I had to buy a new one but unfortunately I could locate a PB VDU and settled for a Relysis 17" Model. As you may be aware the PB VDU is incorporated to the PC sound system. I have just bought two new speakers and have no sound. I recently tried to down load a new Super Sound System but aborted during the down load and I think I might have disabled the sound chip, is this a possibility and if so how can I recall it with out going thru` the laborious and time consuming process of re-installing every thing. Help Pleeease!

Were the old speakers just incorporated in the VDU and with a wire which plugged into the sound card on the pc. If so, getting a new VDU (but with no speakers) shouldn't have affected the sound card, its drivers, etc, etc.
So if that is correct and the new speakers are just not giving you sound, I would just check the connections carefully and then ensure that nothing relevant has been muted on the sound volume dialog box (double-click the yellow speaker in the system tray to open these). Alternatively test the speakers on another system to this out of the troubleshooting equation.
Also, check in Device Manager for any Yellow exclamation/question marks.

Paul, I have tried all that includeing Windows Trouble Shooter down to the last item and can not detect any conflict in Device Manager also the speakers are working independenly. The speaker has disapeared from the right hand side of the the task bar. It is very frustrateing to say the least. You are correct in your assumption re. the ols speakers!:(

Incedently I am running Windows `98SE and the sound card is Intel(r)82801AA AC`97 Audio Controller Sigma Tel Codec

Unless you specifically disable the speaker icon from the system tray, its disappearance indicates faulty drivers.
Try removing all sound card instances in Safe Mode and reboot and thereby reinstall the drivers. Also have you checked out DirectX by running dxdiag from the run box.

I think (know) I might be the culprit and removed the speaker icon! I will try your other method/s

One other thing....the old speakers were probably powered, are the new ones also powered?

MJC. Yes! They are independently powered.Paul I have tried in Safe Mode and the Test Devices in Sound and Music are greyed out also no luck with DXDIAG :( MJC, is there perhaps a music/sound program I have down loaded in that File Log I put into another thread that you have replied to Just Another Pop Up that has possibly overwritten the original soundmusic set up

All this greyed stuff is also indicative of a drivers problem - maybe the download started an installation or something. Have you tried booting into safe mode and then removed all references to sound from device manager and then rebooted?
If that fails - get the latest drivers from the manufacturer (? PB support) and upgrade or reinstall them.
Yeah, looks like you'll need to find the drivers for it...

Paul, Thanx have been into Safe Mode again Clicked/deleted and recovered then went back into safe mode, low and behold all the grey areas where normal.I then followed your reply ie Run DXdiag etc and after some time have recoverd every thing. Please do not ask me how. I have succeeded. And without your invaluable help and MJC`S in put I would still be battleing. Incidently the new Labtec Speakers where also defective and have been exchanged. To my great relief every thing is back to normal except for an irritateing Pop Up which is in another forum.
Thanx! Now I can rest.
