I downloaded two utilities from somewhere, probably from the PC Magazine site. Under Windows 98, they work great. I wonder if they would work under Windows ME or XP.

Enditall shuts down nonessential programs. I use it prior to installing new software, running defrag or scandisk.

Startup is used to get rid of programs invoked when Windows 98 loads. It is much better than msconfig supplied with Windows 98.

Friends of mine want to use these on their systems. Are they likely to work? Might they cause a problem on ME or XP?

They are both likely to work on WinME since they don't seem to be DOS based. The only real difference between Win98 and WinME is that WinME doesn't use DOS. WinXP may be more difficult. I would say you could try it, but a whole bunch of stuff has been rewritten for WinXP and these just may not do it, especially the one for Startups.

WinME doesn't use DOS
The pedantic truth is that WinME does "use DOS". It's just that it has been hidden away from the user. There is a tweak somewhere that can actually re-enable it to run at startup by choice - as with Win98.

All programs that I have used to date that show support for Win98 but not specifically for WinME have actually worked fine for WinME.

Basically it's gonna be an empirical thing. Try it out and see.

Yes, they both work on ME....I have used them on it, especially EndItAll.
