I just completed building a play machine. When booting the memory check says the speed is 100 Mhz instead 133. I used software from Tweak files to id the memory and it said it was 133. The machine is very sluggish. DVDs are jerky and the sound is just as bad. I tried the game Spider Solitaire (comes with WinMe) and it was very slow. The complete system seems that way (slow).
The machine is:
Celeron 700
MSI MS-6368 motherboard
384 MB of ram
13 GB Maxtor
Hitachi DVD
Smart & Friendly CD-RW
video onboard Trident Blade 2D/3D w/ 8 MB shared
sound DirectSound AC97 onboard
Any suggestions on how to speed it up would be appreciated. Oh by the way, the OS is Windows ME.
Well first off, it doesn't matter what the memory says it is it will only run as fast as the speed of the FSB (frint side bus), that means if you put PC133 in a 100MHz(FSB) machine that is the speed it will run at, (this only works if the the speed is equal to or higher than what is needed). And in this cas it is probably running at 66MHz because that is what the FSB for your chip is...
Second the onboard sound and onboard video are going to have a major impact on performance...they will tend to be slower. The video, being only 8MB will definitely impact performance...most newer games NEED at least a 32MB of video memory. Since you have 384MB of RAM see if you can assign some more to the video in your BIOS settings. If you can't assign more memory to the video you may need to either add a hardware DVD decoder card or even a new video card.
What kind of speakers do you have, with onboard sound you may need powered speakers in order to get the best out of the audio.
How many PCI slots do you have open?
Have you checked for device conflicts in Device Manager?
