Ok everyone here sounds like a real expert so I hope someone can shed some light on my situation. I han a computer built for me two years ago by my school. Over the Summer I heard a pop and the power source went blowing out the hard drive as well and motherboard as well.
It was under warranty so they replaced the broken parts. Now I run a Celeron 566 with 128 MB, a Voodoo 3 3000 video card and Windows 98 Second Edition. Also I use a ethernet card and Road Runner for the internet
Everything works fine except the computer will freezeup on me no matter what I am doing. It seems to come in bunches, everything fine then WHAM freezw. I reboot go to do something else WHAM feeeze again. I cannot use my machine for more then 10-15 minutes at time especially if I am on the internet, when the lockups are more frequent. There is no error message just a freeze.
There is more however, sometimes BUT NOT ALWAYS something very odd will happen. I do not know much about computers but Ihave never seen this before. Sometimes when it locks up the monitor will go black adn a small blue window, not a windows error window will pop up.

It says:

OUT OF RANGE
Hf: 30khz-70khz
Vf: 50khz-150khz

Current Frequency
fh 76.6khz- fv 119khz

The window looks like it is created by the monitor if that makes any sense, since it is very similar in size and color to my monitors setting changing screen. The monitor is a KDS Visual Sensation 17inch

Now sicne my computer was fried I am aware there might be a hardware problem. My questions are:

What parts of the computer if messed up will cause constant freezes but not hinder performacen in any other way?

Also, what the hell is up with that frequency screen?

Thanks for reading this long and if anyone out there can help me out I would GREATLY appricate this. I doubt the computer store at my school is gonna help me any more since they were mighty PO'ed tyhey had to put in like four new parts.

Thanks again,Mike

Mike, Welcome!

Are you still under warranty? As our moderator Pete recently pointed out to someone whose system was still under warranty, you risk voiding that if you start tinkering. They replaced, it failed, you paid, they owe you a system that works. I'd take it back till they get it right. They can always return defective parts to their supplier and get reimbursed. However, that is beside the point as they warranteed their product.

Besides, think of all the goodwill you will spread about their sales and service when they make it right!!!

May all your dealings in life be win/win!

With lockups such as you describe I almost always suspect either memory or system resources. With the power supply failure and other components that failed as a result, I think it sounds very much like a memory problem.

I also agree that if it is still under warranty you should take it back until they fix it. Regardless of how many parts they have to replace, it sounds as if the current problem is related to the previous one, and if the memory is damaged, I would think the same previous incident caused it.

In any case, that's what warranties are for, if yours is still active, use it.
