I'm a major fan of Opera (www.opera.com)--at least the version prior to #7, and i'm always looking for a good alternative browser to IE-even tho i still use it and have to support it.

Over the years i've watched quite a few promising browsers fall by the way side ( any one want to say Lynx? ) and one that i've beeen keeping my eye on is the K-meleon, based on the original gecko engine ( more or less like mozilla ).

The newest version, K-meleon v.7 (http://kmeleon.sourceforge.net/) with the updated plugin pack really fits my definition of " sleek, fast, reliable " internet surfer.

If you're looking to get away from the norm-i suggest you give it a try.

Who knows, you might actually be surprised that surfing the net doesn't involve resource hogging :)

I'll have to give K-Meleon a new swing. I tried it a while back and didn't really like it all that much. I've been using Mozilla as my main one and Galeon and Mozilla Firebird as secondary. I'm beginning to like Firebird more as I use it. I use to use free Opera but those adds bugged me so much that I quit using it. IE I used only a couple times in the last couple years (when I was forced to) just can't stand it.

Just yesterday, I read about a new one called iRider (http://www.irider.com). I was reading this (http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,4149,1136577,00.asp) John Dvorak column, where he wrote:

...this fabulous browser was developed by some old XTree hackers. There are so many new features that you have to watch an online movie just to grasp them all. Most important is the thumbnail navigation system, which keeps all your pages in memory for instant reload and fast access. When I'm doing heavy research, iRider is the browser I use now.

It's not free, but it looks pretty cool.

iiibob, Thanks for the mention of K-meleon. I have just downloaded and installed it. Looks good on first acquaintance - I'll see how it goes.

Now all I have to do is find another mail client! <scratches head> Pegasus seems good.

I downloaded K-Meleon too and am using it now in conjunction with Phoenix (renamed Firebird now) and even IE. Thanks for the tip.
It's easy and fast. It's a pleasure to work with, although it does have its few imperfections, such as the bookmarks, which I find not so easy to use as with Phoenix or Opera.
But it should not be forgotten that is is based on the beta code of Mozilla, if I understood right.
So it is not yet perfect.

I thought it might be appropriate to revive this thread with the help of a recent post to "Browsers and Email Clients" in Application and Security, as it's totally on-topic here :

A list of old DOS, some text-based, browsers.
These are simple and small applications which may be interesting for experimentation and useful at times.

Browsers to be found there are Lynx, Bobcat, Arachne, Spin, Skipper, Open World Navigator... there were a lot of them which nobody knows about today anymore.
