View Full Version : Abit KT7A-Raid MAJOR Booting Problem

After installing a new Heatsink-Fan, my mobo doesn't boot-up. The Del key doesn't work neither the insert key, and there is a bass beep "bee-boo" coming out once from the PC speaker.
I also get the message:
"Award Bootblock Bios v1.0 Bios checksum error.
Detecting floppy drive A media. Insert system Disk and Press enter"
When I tried to boot with a boot up floppy I get the message (I/O error, Replace system disk and press any key).
I have also tried to discharge the cmos, pull out the battery for a few minutes and put it back, unplug the PSU cord for a while
and the Mobo power supply cord, but always the same.

What is going on here?
I have tried taking out the cpu, cleaning it with a toothbrush and acetone and then putting it back in.
I have placed fans to all fan headers.
I disconnect all ide cables and reconnect them after a few seconds.
The cmos battery stayed out of the mobo last night for 8 hours.
I set all jumpers to 2-3 for a few seconds and then set them again to default.
STILL THE SAME
When booting the PC speaker does a bass "bee- boo" and the monitor displays the message: "Award Bootblock Bios v1.0, Bios checksum error, Detecting floppy drive A media"
When trying to boot using a system disk with the 3R Abit's Bios I get the message: "Detecting floppy drive A media, Drive media is 1,44 MB", then the cursor stays blinking.
The insert key doesn't drives me to bios.

I can't even boot with a floppy disk. I tried to format a:, then transferred system files only and boot but the message remains: "Insert system disk and press enter".

I also downloaded the Drdflash.exe file (Caldera DR Dos) from Paul's KT7 FAQ site, and when booting with that file I get the message: "Starting Caldera DR-DOS, can't load BDOS Kernel file at A:\IBMDOS.com, system halted" and.....system halts with the cursor blinking.
Is there a jumper that I need to move to bypass the Boot-block?
What else can I do?

I don't have access to another cpu or mobo, so how can I say if it is the mobo or the cpu (AYHJA Y 1400@1630).

Please help.
P.S. I feel so shocked about that terrorist attack. Do they belong to the HUMAN species? God bless the victims.

Only thing I can think of is to re-check the CPU and make sure it was reinstalled correctly, if removed, and check to be sure the heatsink is not in a bind, shorting on something, or putting the CPU in a bind.

Since you just replaced the heatsink, I'm fairly sure it's related to that, you might also try going back to the old heatsink and make sure it still works with it.

Also check the CPU/heatsink for thermal paste that might have been squeezed out onto the CPU itself, we've seen a couple of topics recently concerning thermal paste that apparently got into the contacts and fried CPU's.

This Topic (http://www.pcguide.com/ubb/Forum8/HTML/000386.html) is related to those mentioned above, and may have some helpful info.

Well, I installed the same cpu to a brand new KT7A-Raid and guess what?
Exactly the same symptoms.
After a (very close) look to the cpu's core, I found that it is (almost invisible) damaged at the corners. I called my reseller and he said me to send it back.
I hope that he willl give me a new AYHJA Y one.

What can I say? I loved that chip. 1400@1630 straight out of the box. But it didn't last.

Considering that the cpu is malfunctioning and isn't dead, is there possible to repair it somehow?
I like very much this cpu and don't want to replace it without a single attempt to fix it.
But HOW?

Please post your ideas.

Thanks.

Got an electron microscope?

Considering that ther are millions of transiters in just a few square centimeters, that is what you will need in order to attempt a repair, and since the CPU manufacturers don't give actual "wiring diagrams" of them you'll be on your own ther too...sorry it is just like the Parthenon...history. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/eek.gif http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

(The above was an attempt to add a little levity to a frustrating circumstance)

I got the electron microscope.
Now where can I find that "wiring diagram"? http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

I think it is www.cpuwiringdiagrams.com (http://www.cpuwiringdiagrams.com)

It would probably be under the AMD-Intel shareware tab. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
