I have a Desknote ECG-A928 Pentium 4 1.66 GHz, 256 Mb RAM running Windows XP Pro. I have been able to log onto the internet, and suddenly one morning, my computer gives me the error message that "LAN Cable is unplugged" even though it is not. I have tried numerous ethernet cables (all of which work and have been used before by my computer) and even reinstalled my network card and done a system restore. Nothing has worked. I have also tried running straight to the DSL modem instead of through the SMC Barricade router. Ping test (loopback) shows that the card is working fine, but for some reason, the modem and router don't acknowledge that my computer is even turned on when the cable is plugged in. THUS, the problem is NOT the cables, but has something to do with my computer.

Any help would be appreciated,

Try another known good NIC. Just because you get loop back doesn't mean it is not bad.

You could try:
1. Check if the pins in NIC socket are O.K.
2. Check in the device manager if there is yellow exclamation mark beside the NIC card. If there is, then NIC driver could be problem. Reinstall the driver, preferably not from your HDD.
3. Remove the NIC driver and reinstall it.
4. Suggestion from Variable.

Also check your setting for all NICs and make sure nothing has changed, also other clck on the LAN connection in My Networks and see if any are disabled.
