continuous beep

I have a HP Pavillion ze4140 notebook when I try to boot up all I get is a screen going into diagnostics and a continuous beep pausing very briefly very often,none of the keys on the keypad work so when the screen is waiting for input I cannot do it, the beeping stops when I get to this screen even the on/off button is dead at this stage and I have to press the reset button to be able to start again. I can boot up by plugging a standard keyboard in the socket and every thing works fine if I unplug this one and open up Word all I get is rows and rows of number sevens as if the number seven key is stuck. I have changed the keyboard and the same thing happens I have restored XP and it still happens. Does anyone have any ideas??? please

Do both notebook keyboard (the original and the replacement) produce the same result after removing the standard keyboard.
If it does the same thing with another keyboard it sounds like it could the keyboard connector on the notebook itself that is faulty. You may want to inspect it for any damage.

By what you have told us, I would agree with pave_spectre, that either the keyboard itself is faulty or the connection to the main board is faulty. I personnally would think that the keyboard is the most likely culprit as the problem can be bypassed when you plug in an external keyboard.

Both old and replacement keyboards do the same I have looked at the connector but cannot see any signs of damage.
