View Full Version : Disabled function on right-click

Here's one that I have not run into before. There's a particular web site that I go to where the right-click is disabled. No matter what page I go to on that particular site, if I right click on the page I get a message that says, "Sorry Charlie, that function is disabled."
The right click works fine on any other site. I'm wondering if that is by design, and if so, why would they want to do design their site that way? I doubt that it's anything on my end, otherwise every site would be that way for me, wouldn't it? Does anyone have any thoughts on this?
Thanks ~Frank~

Right after I submitted this thread, I thought about trying something. I went to that site, clicked on View/Source. And in the text it said, "No Right Click Script." So, I guess that answers my question--it's that way by design. I still can't figure out why they would want to do that.

copyrights a lot of sites are doing this now that way you can't copy and paste and can't save pics or link them

Well--I guess that makes sense.

Wonder if CTRL+C and CTRL+V would copy and paste OK?

You may find that using a different browser (eg Netscape / Opera) will enable you to do what you want.

Wonder if CTRL+C and CTRL+V would copy and paste OK? Yes--it does work. I just tried it and you can copy and paste the text from the page. I use IE 6 for my browser. If anyone has Netscape or any other browser and would like to see what happens, this http://www.nmchili.com/ is the web site. I'd be curious to see if it happens with the different browsers.

The particular piece of javascript used to stop right clicks only works for IE, Opera can right click just fine and netscape should be able to as well.

Yep, works just fine with Netscape 7.1....

If you want the RClick menus to work on such sites for IE then either add www.nmchili.com (or any other site of your choosing) to the restricted sites zone (where active scripts are disabled by default) or change your IE's internet security settings such that active scripting are disabled. Close and reopen the browser for the settings to take effect.

If you want the RClick menus to work on such sites for IE then either add www.nmchili.com (or any other site of your choosing) to the restricted sites zone (where active scripts are disabled by default) I did that, Paul and it worked. If I'm understanding it correctly, when I add a site to the restricted zone, it will just disable active scripts? I thought adding a site to the restricted zone would not allow that site to be downloaded in the browser. I have always been a little confused as how to set the activeX controls and just what they are. I just now set all of mine as Disabled. So, what am I missing out on since they are all disabled?

There are various default settings for all the security "zones" but which can be customised as required. The default settings in the restricted sites hardly allows anything to "execute" apart from displaying any html therein. Restricted sites can display but in a safe manner - unless, that is, you enable bits and pieces from its custom button.

So one can utilise these zones by adding sites to them such that different security settings can be customised for a variety of sites.

edit:
Sorry - to answer your question. By disabling ActiveX and Scripting one will lose some of the functionality of "pretty sites" and certain things just wont happen, when anticipated. If this is the case, and it is from a site that you trust, then just add the site to your trusted sites and have low security settings set within.

It's a shame that the crackers and writers of malicious code have made the internet so much more of a jungle than it might have been - but that's life I guess.
