After I replaced the HSF because of high temperatures, I went to power on my pc, then it didnt work. The lights and fans will come on very briefly then everything will immmediately shut down. Then there is a continuous low tone beeping that has a pattern of low-higher-low-higher tone beeps and there is no break in the beeps. On the motherboard there is a light near the IDE connectors that will light up red and is labeled Over_temp. Noticing that, I proceeded to check the CPU and the HSF, and nothing wrong there. Does anybody have any idea of what the problem could be? Any halp would be greatly appreciated.

Did you make sure that the heatsink fan is plugged into the motherboard? Also, I would make sure that the heatsink and CPU are seated properly.

I have the HSF plugged directly into the power supply connector (it is a coolermaster). I have re-seatedoth the cpu and heatsink and have received same results.

The heatsink/fan should have a connector to plug into the motherboard so that the motherboard can monitor and know if it is working. If it doesn't detect it, it will probably do exactly what you are experiencing. I could be wrong about the details since I am not familiar with the heatsink you are using, but I believe the basic principal is common to almost all newer mobos....

If you want to continue to use the HSF plugged into the PSU, you will first have to find a case fan or other heatsink fan with a 3-pin lead. Plug that into the motherboard CPUFAN header. The system should then boot. Immediately go into BIOS setup and disable CPU Fan Detect, or similar. Once that's done, you can unplug the case fan from the motherboard header and you should then be good to go.

I went and got a buddies HSF with a 3-pin lead and hooked it up and everything worked fine. He said that I could just have it so everything works fine now. Thanks for all your help!
