Okay here goes, this is what happened. The other day my little camera fell off the shelf and the cord was tangled up with the moinitor electrical cord and it pulled it out as it fell. I went to plug it in and it turned green for a sec and then amber. When I pluged in the cords it made a crackling sound. Don't know if it does that normally. I rebooted my pc and heard no unusual noises and appeared to load just fine but no changes with the monitor.Any suggestions re: the problem. Awful weriod (the timing and all) if it is the video card. My friend is going to get me a new cord tommorow to see if it was that. Help! I have a gateway.

Try another video card but I'm leaning on something in your motherboard... hopefully only your video.

Welcome to http://www.pcguide.com/ubb/pcgubb.gif
When I pluged in the cords it made a crackling sound.
Do you mean the power cord into the monitor? If so it sounds like you left the power switched on when plugging the cord in resulting in some arcing http://homepage.eircom.net/~bray/em/omonitor.gifbetween the cord and the monitor pins before an actual physical connection was made. Have done that myself quite a number of times and it has never affected the video card.http://homepage.eircom.net/~bray/em/opc.gif

Try the monitor on a different computer. This sounds like a monitor problem rather than a video card problem.

Like the monitor is fried. Does the power light come on when you turn it on? Try disconnecting the monitor from the video card and turn it on. Do you get the same amber screen? Many monitors will tell you when they aren't receiving a video signal. Tell us what happens.
Or try the monitor on a different computer.

Yes the power light comes on when I turn it on. I never plugged it in with the power off, obviously not the right decisions. Fried??? OMG I am not smart about all this stuff as you all, I am an amature and learning all the time. I will have someone else do what you are telling me. Im not sure I know how. Dont mean to be stupid, but you mean like literally take the card out? Sorry

The monitor is the thingy that looks like a TV. The video card is inside the computer case. The two are connected by a cable that is permanently attached to the monitor, but that can be disconnected from the video card.
After turning off the computer, disconnect the cable from the video card. Then turn on the monitor. Tell us what happens.

You can take the monitor and plug it into a different computer, that way you can determine if it is a problem with the monitor. If the monitor still doesnt work then you likely need a new one.
If the monitor works in a different computer, then it may be a video card problem that either needs fixing or just a replacement video card.

I appreciate all your input. I said I was an amature not an idiot LOL I know what a monitor is and where the video card is silly LOL I will test out the monitor, just didnt get the opportunity to do it this weekend. So I guess the power cord is not the problem adn shouldnt buy another one. Thats the first decision. Can't afford to spend money I dont have.

Definitely doesnt seem to be something as simple as a faulty cable.
Power cables usually take a fair amount of physical or electrical effort to destroy, but conversely are often very cheap to replace. Unlike any any of the other components that it might be.

So you think I need to try that first or test out the moniter first?
I see you are from ozzie land Pave. My best friend here in Oklahoma is from brisbane

Easiest to test first is the monitor, usually by connecting it to another computer if you have one spare or if you can borrow a friends computer for a few minutes. That will almost imediately tell you whether or not the monitor is the problem or if you will need to start looking at other possibilities.
