Hello,
I have just purchased a new SeaSonic SS 400W PSU. I installed it in my new computer case. I have not installed anything else, as I am going to move my old MoBo and drives from a Sony machine into the new case. I thought that I would plug the PSU in and turn on, just to see if it worked before I dismantled my Sony system. (So no load is on the PSU).
I was surprised that the fan did not start, no sound at all! So, what does this mean? Is the PSU dead? Is it OK, but it needs a load to start working? Or is it working, but the fan only starts as the PSU heats up?

Any advise about which is correct?

I think you may find that a PSU requires a load across two of its terminals before it will power up.

An ATX power supply will not power up until switched on, and this is done through the motherboard connector. Applying power with no M/B puts it in stand by mode until activated by the power switch on the front panel. Don't worry, it's probably OK.
