I just got a new system, and I thought I'd put my dvd player in it (Sony). I installed power dvd and everything worked perfectly! then I tried playing a dvd a little later, and for some reason, it won't work properly. The audio is terrible, static and scratchy, and the picture even lags. My system should have no problem handling dvd playback.
AMD Athlon XP 2500
1024MB PC2700 ram
Western Digital 40 and 80GB 7200 RPM HD's
LG 52x24x52 CDRW
MSI GFX FX5200 Graphics card
M-Audio Delta audiophile 2496 Sound card
I can't figure out why the thing would work fine one minute, then act up the next time I tried it. The drive is about a year old, and it hasn't seen a lot of use. Any ideas?
Can you provide the motherboard specs..make, model and chipset?
Did you have different / additional applications running the 2nd time? Sometimes even things like Norton sw can affect it.
Playing a DVD can use almost all the resources - cpu especially.

It's an Asus A7V8X-X motherboard and the chipset is Northbridge:VIA KT 400 Southbridge:VIA VT8235.
As for background apps, I disabled all the applications in the system tray right away (my AV is disabled). I also tried lowering the screen resolution and refresh rate, no luck. I checked the CPU load while running the dvd player, and aside from a couple of spikes when I fired it up, the CPU load never went above 42%. I did install and run Adaware in between the time when things were working well and when I found the problems, and I also defraged, but that was it. Just to make sure, I uninstalled Adaware to check for a conflict. I also checked the drivers and they're all current (also made sure there was no conflict in the device manager).
One thing I notice is when I boot up my machine, and the intro audio clip comes on, it skips and distorts a little as well. I can't remember if it did this before I stuck in the drive, and I don't know if there's any relation to my main problem, but all the other audio on the machine is fine. The drive reads data and music cds fine.
