View Full Version : Irritating Search page in IE6

Hi, I'm not sure whether this has been discussed, but hope someone will help me out.

I'm using IE6 with SP1 installed, running on XP. Somehow I have accidentally installed some search page thingy that it will pop-up and cover my whole screen, even my taskbar, once in a while.

I would like to know how to un-install those irritating internet script programs. It's not reported in the "Add/Remove Programs". Of course my last resort would be uninstall IE and reinstall again.

Thanks for reading.

Actually uninstalling and reinstalling IE would be a lot of work and probably wouldn't stop the problem. It sounds like you have been hijacked. You can go to mjc's security thread (http://www.pcguide.com/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=15179) and download Hijack This as well as Spybot and/or AdAware. Run Spybot and/or AdAware to see if they can catch and dispose of the nasty. Then run HiJack This and copy and paste the log here so the experts (not me) can check it out and see if the malware is still there is some form....

You have been hijacked, follow Budfred's advice and post the log......

You didn't post the complete log... The header as well as the running processes are crucial in helping determine the problem.

But anyhow, have Hijack This fix the following by placing a check in the appropriate boxes and hitting fix checked. Make sure all browser and all Windows Explorer windows are closed before fixing.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,HomeOldSP = http://www.ewebsearch.net/

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [spp] regedit -s C:\spp.reg

When done, reboot. Then find and delete:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\search.html <--- This file
C:\spp.reg <--- This file too.

Ok...here is the full log file of hijack. Anyway when I delete those that you mention, and on my IE, those search bar appear again.

Ooops, sorry guys. The "hihackers" has been eliminated. I missed out a spp.reg file, that's why it came back.

Thanks for helping me. :)

If this is a fresh run of HiJack This, it still has some entries for "topsearcher" and that means you probably aren't done. Someone who knows more about it will be along soon....

OK, you need to fix these again in Hijack This. Make sure all windows except Hijack This are closed before you fix.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer,SearchURL = http://www.topsearcher.com/ie/
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,SearchURL = http://www.topsearcher.com/ie/
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://www.topsearcher.com/ie/
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://www.topsearcher.com/ie/
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://www.topsearcher.com/ie/
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://www.topsearcher.com/ie/
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://www.topsearcher.com/ie/

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [spp] regedit -s C:\spp.reg

Then you must delete that file.... C:\spp.reg
It adds all the topsearcher crap back at startup.

Glad to help.
