Hi,
I have the following problem. I'm using win98SE and when I want to shutdown my PC (through start-shutdown PC or even through the power button on my pc) it automatically restarts within 1 second or sometimes even after a couple of minutes. I don't think this is software related, because otherwise I can work without (almost) any problems. I already had it 'repaired' in the store, but they hadn't had the problem there (or they just didn't spend enough time on my computer). Anyhow, it is certainly not a power cable failure, because I tried several new cables and they don't repair the problem. Maybe on of you knows what to do???
many thanks
kris

thers a lot of possabilities for this but try this.Start>settings>contrl panel.click on system icon select the tab Device manager look down the list and see if there is an (!)exclamation mark if there is you have a conflict.double click on the item or items w/(!)mark windows will tell you what the problem is and suggest a way to fix?(hopefully).if that does not help you can go to Microsoft web site at support.microsoft.com/directory and type Q242934.I hope this helps some and hang around theirs others here i'm sure that might of had this problem before.

A couple possibilities. It could be a power supply problem. The soft power switch may be bad within the power supply itself. You could try attaching another known good power supply to the system and test it that way. Another is the power switch on the case itself. It may be hanging. A way to test this is to power the system up without the switch. Using a small screwdriver, you can short the jumpers that the power switch connects to on the motherboard and then attempt a shutdown. Or, the motherboard may be having some issues. You could try to clear the BIOS with the jumper on the motherboard and then re-configure the BIOS. Make sure you write down or print the BIOS settings before doing this. Hope this helps.

I may be misunderstanding the question, but a lot of people are having problems getting their puter to shutdown...so Shutdown troubleshooter (http://www.aumha.org/a/shutdown.htm) I am a little baffled by the restart..most problems I have heard of in the shutdown just "hang" somewhere.

Also, you may want to install the Windows 98 SE shutdown supplement. You can download it here (http://www.microsoft.com/Windows98/downloads/contents/WURecommended/S_WUFeatured/Win98SE/Default.asp).

Hi,
I had my bios checked, but that seems to be ok.
also pulled out the power on jumper on the MB after starting up, but he still restarts, so that isn't the problem.
I'm starting to get desperate!
please help me!!
greetings kris.

sorry I forgot.
I downloaded all the possible supplements (I think), but the problem isn't solved with those.
I have no device conflicts in windows, but when it does shutdown, the numlock light stays on all the time, but he did that since the beginning and it was never a problem, but it could be related to something, because I think that isn't normal also???
thanx

hi kandries,
i'm not shure if this helps, but i used to have the same problem, although my computer just started up again after using start->shut down (my power button always switched the computer off so i didn't worry to much). the next time i reinstalled windows 98se the problem was gone.
good luck

think reinstalling is the only option left.
I will give you feedback after I've done that, maybe I'll run Windows Millenium now.
thanks

Hey,
Before re-installing anything, whether it's 98 or the dreaded ME, try this:
1) Boot up as normal and enter the BIOS setup. Make sure all Power Management is disabled.
2) Go to Start/Settings/ControlPanel/Display/ScreenSaver/Advanced. Make sure all power management options are set to "Never".
Hope that helps. Power management is nothing but a pain in the neck. If it doesn't, then I would have to agree with the consensus that it's most likely a power supply issue.
Good luck.

Hi,
all the power management options in the BIOS are disabled except the first one that says ACPI or something, because when I enable that, the computer runs windows in mode (it seems that way anyway) and starts to build it's hardware database again. anyway i thought this was a bad thing and enabled it again, but all the other options are disabled. Try to disable them in windows, see if that helps.
by the way: is it really a bad thing to turn of the ACPI function in the BIOS power management?? because on restart the windows look terrible???
greetings and many thanks

Video in suspend: yes
Syspend type: Stop grant
modem use IRQ: NA
suspend mode: disabled
HDD power down: disabled

wake-up by PCI card: disabled
power on by ring: disabled
USB KB wake-up from S3: disabled
CPU thermal-throttling: 62.5%

** Reload Global Timer Events **
primary IDE 0: disabled
Primary IDE 1: disabled

I also turned of all power management in windows "control panel - display", but he still keeps restarting.
thanks for all the response!
by the way: if i disable the first function, it seems that windows is reinstalling all it's components and the screen looks like start-up in safe-mode.

Hey,
Try these two sites for possible solutions:
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q229/1/26.ASP?FR=1
http://www.windows-help.net/windows98/troub-51.shtml
Good luck.
EDIT: I read somewhere that if you have ACPI enabled, peripherals can start the computer automatically. When you try to shut down the computer, make sure you don't have any CDs or floppies in their respective drives. If you have external peripherals, try turning them off before you try to shut the computer off. Might help, might not. Just a thought.

If i disable my ACPI, the computer sort of reinstalls win98 on startup.
is this normal? you get a vga type of screen (640x400) and he starts rebuilding its hardware database. Don't know if this helps, 'cause I immediately canceled and enabled it again. after that the computer starts up normally, but my problem is off course not solved.
find it strange that it sometimes just restarts after a couple of hours and sometimes immediately.
got any explanation for that???
well I just moved, so I haven't had much time to look at the problem again, getting tired, maybe it is my MB that disfunctions.
In that case I have to go to the store sometime next week, cause it is still in warranty. Hope I can get a new (and better) one. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif
I don’t know if this will help you or not.
But in my Bios I have an area for boot up.
In that area I have the normal boot select for drive order and so on.
It also has a section for reboot after power failure and a few other options.
They are not in the power management that you have listed above.
Worth a look.

Kandries, I wish I had your problem. I can't get my computer to show my desktop. I do have a suggestion on how to solve your problem. Just leave it turned on!

Kandries, SMILE now. I'm not trying to make fun of you with my comments. I'm just trying to lighten things up a bit. However if I ever get my computer started up again, I think I'll leave it turned on forever. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Moving didn't solve the problem either http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
Can it possibly be that a virus is causing this.
I don't have a virusscanner anymore (see topic general hardware - antivirus), so is it possible to scan my computer on-line somewhere (and possibly have the virus removed?).
Because I understand that it is impossible to install a virusscanner once a virus is present on the computer?? Don't know maybe it isn't a virus, but I still don't have antivirus software ( I first have to download a program, but I have no internet until september 24, at least not at home).
That's when I get cable!! jippie!!
Go to Bootdisk (http://http//www.bootdisk.com/) and download F-prot, it is partway down the main page...it fits on a floppy and runs from there.

If it isn't a virus, what about the repair option in win98SE.
could that solve the problem maybe, or does it also overwrite any additional service packs I have downloaded??
thanks for the response.

Now I couldn't start up my computer for three days until yesterday, then it started up with no problems. Maybe it is my power supply. But if it is, is it still possible then that my power led on my MB keeps burning???
I will probably bring it to the store anayway.
thanks for all your response!

Yes, my problem is finally solved.
It seemed that my power supply was damaged and they replaced it still under warranty!
I have a brand new one and it works fine until now.
I have to thank you all for trying to solve my problem and for the information supplied.
I learned a lot.
thanks
Kris
