Hey Mitch, how about giving some lessons/instructions [perhaps in a file] on how to display those cool images in a thread.

I saw insructions in another thread and tried it but couldn't get it to work:confused:

Is it possible to alter the dimensions of the image?
I couldn't find a way to alter the number of Bytes occupied by an image.

I can't get it to go in here that way, but the way I had always done it was:

*url of image

I actually learned how to post images HERE on this Forum- a while back.

As I recall, Jabarnutcase, Sea and Yoda all helped me.

Two ways of posting an image in a Forum post:

1) Via "Attach File" using files of not more than 20k and extensions from any of these:- Gif jpg png txt zip bmp jpegn.

Simply browse to your selected image filename - from, say, "My Pictures", "My Documents" etc, enter it in the box provided and the PC Guide server will upload it and place it at the bottom of your post. But remember the 20k file size limit - which is limiting, depending on your type of image.

2) Or via the Web, using the your URL expressed, as Sea has already said as - [img] <file name>{/img}. In this case, there is NO file size limit, other than common sense and consideration for those members using dial-up

The image will appear wherever in your post you have place the URL.

First, however, you need to upload your, say, "My Pictures" file to the web and then copy the resulting URL for pasting in the Forum.

If you have a web site, this simple enough and I use a great little program called "Send to FTP", which it does from my right click menu.

If you haven't got a web site, or any free webspace from your iSP, then the same result can be obtained by using one of the many free picture albums - like Webshots, although there are better ones to be found via Google.

A picture tells a thousand words and images in posts can really help get the nitty gritty of someone's problem.

Just post back if you need any help or advice. :) :)

I was trying to post a joke in a thread.
The joke is in a Word document and includes an image.
I saved the image as a bitmap file and opened it in Paint [and also "Imaging"], but it was way above the 20,000 Bytes and I couldn't figure how to reduce the size.
When I tried to "attach" it nothing happened, like it was refused because it was too big.
Since the image was a key part of the joke I aborted the attempt.

I split this off the IE topic.....

a. because it was starting to hijack that thread
b. looked like a good candidate for the FAQ section......
c. I was bored....:D

mjc: I moved this here from the FAQ forum as non-mods cannot post replies there. If you want, I can change the permissions of that forum if we want to use it differently (perhaps as a general purpose "how to" forum?) but for now it's fine here. --c

Sylvander: bitmap files are HUGE, no wonder you couldn't post it here. Try saving it as a JPEG file and it should work. --c

I was going to move it also...and then move it back.

I was thinking of adding a couple of these "how to use forum features", since we do get some repeats of these from time to time.....

I checked and the image in the Word document is a bitmap.
I can save the bitmap image to disk and open it in MS Paint or Kodak Imaging, but neither will convert to jpeg or any other useful form.

Do I need to install another imaging application?
I could install "Publisher" or "Adobe Photoshop" or "Paintshop Pro".
I know little to nothing about these.

It is always handy to be able to convert to jpg, so I would say to install whichever graphics program you have handy to do so. One that will actually let you choose the size of the final jpg is nice, but that may be harder to find. Most graphics programs that are at all more elaborate than Paint will give you the option to "Save As" a jpg.

AAhhhh!
So that's what it looks like when it's well done.
That's a nice clear photo, if lacking some sunlight.
What am I saying!
It is not the sun's fault, nor the camera's fault.
It's the photographers fault!

Who's that handsome chap?
"From a distance" anyway.
This is where you say:
"From close up I'm even more handsome."

And what is that guitar?

I played drums in my youth, as my son now does, but I bought myself an "Ovation Balladeer - Custom Cutaway".
It sounds nice.
I seldom bother playing it now.
I'd give it to the boy, but he plays drums and isn't serious about guitar, and anyway, he'd probably get it damaged during a wild party.
This is not the kind of instrument one takes risks with.

How's the recovery coming along?
I went into hospital some years back for a small operation and when I came round the doctor visited and said:
"Ah yes! Your the vasectomy aren't you?"
Just a little "in" hospital joke.
Just as well I'm not so easily "Gulled".

I think that's Loch Lomond in the background.

shortly after pic was taken, a dog came out of the red roofed property behind me, into the narrow road outside, he then went back into the farmyard, and came out again with about a dozen sheep which he escorted some distance down the winding road and into a field with an open gate. once they were all inside he closed the gate and went back to the farmhouse. there were no human intervention at all.

I've watched dogs in scotland before and always been impressed at how efficient they are, particularly when unattended.

we spent several hours at that spot and saw no people at all.

maybe they had heard me singing.)
------------------------------------
don't know why I'm toting a 12 string around scotland ?

I'm on the mend now, still pretty sore but the bruising has gone down and the scar is healing well. It is a bit (lot) bigger than they told me it would be, I think they used a machette. but I'm glad to be on the right side of it after all the cancellations.
