hi guys,

i'm setting up a new barebone system using the following:

msi k7n2g
2 sticks kingmax pc 2700 256 mb ddr333
generic 300 W ps

the issue is that the system will not boot. that motherboard comes with a diagnostic bracket with an led display, which indicate that the system is hanging because of a memory failure, also providing continues long beeps. i have tried using both sticks, and single sticks of ram, but to no avail. i've tried inserting the ram in different slots, i've tried adjusting the frequency timings in the bios to something slower, or left it at automatic detect. i've tried changing the volt settings to the ram. i've also tried clearing the cmos to factory settings, with no luck. it will, however, boot once in a blue moon.

i took out from my other computer, a kingmax 256 pc2700 ddr333 (purchased couple months ago) and inserted it to the new system. that worked without issues, under numerous settings. figuring it may be bad sticks of ram, i inserted the new ram into the old system. surprisingly, both sticks worked without problems!!

any suggestions greatly appreciated!

btw, this forum rocks!!

Simple use the old RAM in the new machine.....and the new RAM in the old machine.

I have had that happen, some boards are just more "discriminating" as to what RAM you feed them...

If possible exchange those two stick for a differnet brand and see it it likes them any better.

Welcome to http://www.pcguide.com/ubb/pcgubb.gif

It sounds like you may have a problem with the slots on the motherboard... Make sure you don't have a short, triple check the seating of the RAM, maybe blow out the RAM slot or clean them (very carefully) with a very pure alcohol or other safe solvent, check for wires in the way and so on....

If all else fails, it seems like there is something else wrong with the mobo and it may not even be the RAM that is the problem.....

Edit: or do what mjc suggested while I was writing....:D

thanks for your feedback guys! i wish it was that simple to switch ram sticks, as the new system will require 512 mb of ram, so one of the new sticks has to be put into the new system.

i'll try reseating them again, but it looks like i may need to head back to the store to exchange them...

Yeah, exchanging them would be my first impulse. MSI brand motherboards tend to be very picky about RAM. I have found that original Samsung, Crucial and Kingston work very well. Not familiar with the Kingmax brand, but I would assume it's more generic than anything else.

Good luck. Hopy you get it sorted out.
