I installed spybot's search and destroy last week and the results were tremendous. All the pop-ups except for those coming from "Messenger" have been blocked.
Spybot's addresses how to get rid of Messenger pop-ups in their FAQ. Only problem is I don't understand the instructions.
The instructions advise me to go to START, then ALL PROGRAMS, the ADMINISTRATIVE TOOLS. I don't have ADMINISTRATIVE TOOLS. So that path is a dead end.
The alternate instructions are as follows: "You need tgo make it (ADMINISTRATIVE TOOLS) visible under TASKBAR AND START MENU PROPERTIES by right clicking on taskbar, then PROPERTIES.
I'm lost.
Any help would be appreciated. I want to be totally rid of pop-ups soon.
Also, anyone with a recomendation for the best effective free spam blocker?
Thanks in advance.

You don't say what version of windoze you are running, but in XP, administrative tools can also be found from Start>settings>control panel. I think it's similar in Win2k.

You can also go to Black Vriper's web site (http://www.blackviper.com/) for details about how to tweak this and other issues in WinXP and Win2K.

David,
Thanks for the help.

I hit Start, but then there is no "Settings". What am I missing?
Thanks again.

If you go to the start button and scroll upto Accessories and then Sysytem Tools or Administrative you will find what you are looking for there

You can enter X:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Administrative Tools in the Run Box or the Address Bar of IE (where X is the drive you have Windows installed on) if you cant find it any other way.
R-Clicking on the Taskbar and choosing Properties but THEN >> Start Menu >> Customize >> Advanced >> Start Menu Items THEN Scroll to the bottom of the list and choose the options you want for displaying the Administrative Tools.

You can also do it the easy way:
go to www.grc.com,
go to Free Stuff,
download "shoot the messenger",
and set it to block the Messenger messages.

Or you can do it this way:
Start - run - type "services.msc" (without quotes).
Scroll down to Messenger and double click on it.
Press the STOP button.
Then, set the "Startup Type" to "Disabled"
That's it.

One other question: does this mean I will not receive my MS updates via internet?
Thanks again.

No, Windows Messenger Service has nothing to do with updates.
Autoupdate should work normally.
