Hello,
I'm having trouble setting up a 2 computer network using 10/100 Ethernet. One computer is running win xp professional and the other win 98.
I am quite new at networking... so I started by running the "set up home or small office... wizard" on the xp computer... it said to run the xp cd on the other comp to set up the network there too... I am using ICS & File\printer sharing over TCP\IP. Ok... the setup was done on both computers and here is what happenes: both computers see each other... I can access the shared drives on both BUT -> on the xp comp. it takes very very long to access the shared drive of the 98 comp, sometimes it hangs and changes to "not responding" but once the drive is accessed the speed boosts and there are no more problems, I can run, copy from, copy to, etc at very good speed.
On the 98 comp. I can connect almost instantly and see the drive of the xp comp. but whenever I try to copy larger files such as mp3 or .exe the network hangs... (smaller files such as .txt are no problem - also the size problem only occures on the 98 comp. on the xp I can even run games realtime from the 98 comp.) it says the other comp. (the xp) is not connected or not responding... and it doesent show anything in the network neighborhood screen, neither machine nor the entire network icon... if i reboot it it makes no difference... it doesent solve the problem until I reboot the xp comp. Now the funny part is that while the 98 comp doesen't see the xp comp. the network still works, both ways... on the xp I can still see everything on 98 and on the 98 I can get on the net through ICS, games see each other and can connect... i even have a little chat software that also works when the network is "down".
Also the network drives are not firewalled and the 98 comp. has administrator priviledges (or no restrictions at all).

Now i'm guessing that the 98 to xp network is the problem but i cannot run xp (or anything other than 95/98 on the other comp. due to system requirements) so I have to find a way around it...
Any ideas?
Thanx in advance

Try disabling ICF (Internet Connection Firewall) on the XP computer:

This link covers all windows OS's and best of all has pictures :D Shows how to network between the various OS's and each instruction is flagged with an Icon as to which OS it is for.

Or if you prfer I have a zip file stored on my site that I made up my self with fuller details, but the size is about 1.5MB. All the info in it has been garnered from the net (including form the above link).
