Firstly, thanks to all of you for this amazing forum, which I just found today...you guys are the best.
Ok..problems...I somewhat foolishly agreed to help out my Mother-in-Law, whose computer had died..she didn't trust the repair people she'd seen, who tried to sell her a new one, so we resolved to install the hard drive and dvd etc. in a new system to try to salvage the data (having assumeed mobo and cpu were dead)
Bought an Advance board (10B/F) and a PIII Cpu, and put them together in a Nokia case (300W)...on initial boot, all seemed fine..logo came up, Windows 98 started to load, Virus scan icon came up, and reached the Windows password field..tried to guess an entry, which received an error, and went out to ask my wife..
Came back to black screen, nothing...switched off, checked connections, ram etc. No beep on bootup(speaker didn't beep in any coniguration), fan running, hard drive seems to engage (makes start up whirring), keyboard lights flash on, then go off, monitor remains in standby..Have taken out mobo battery, to try to reset. Also, strangr Hex list on blackscreen during first bootup, mother-in-law says this appeared a couple of weeks prior to failiure. Is the new Cpu dead or are there conflicts with data on old (Mesh) hard-drive? Could I begin again with a new Hard drive? Please help with further action...thanks(and apologies for rambling)

MBR virus??

sounds like possibly you have spent much unneeded £/$, and perhaps need to fdisk/reformat/reinstall.

had you tried fdisk /mbr ?

and Welcome to pcguide!

Thanks, but unless I'm seriously missing something, there is no way I can think of to get the Fdisk to work..there is no response from the floppy or the monitor..I have done 3 or 4 rebuilds/builds before, but this is really stumping me
