I found this interesting. I was looking through the Best Buy sunday supplement and found this. Lexmark z605ink jet printer for $49.99. I just ran out of ink in my hp both color and black to replace them it will cost me $32 each. It's worth me going out and getting that lexmark (if it comes with full ink cartridges) run it dry throw it out then go get an other one. I haven't read the paper for a while man have prices dropped.

I am not sure, but at that price it may come with downsized print cartridges. I have seen some pretty ridiculous prices on printers out there though....

There are places you can find the ink for less, especially if you are willing to buy offbrand....

I have found that Lexmark BJ printers are absolutely NOT the ones to buy. The new ink cartridges are more than some new printers - Canon and Epson come to mind. I have seen new Lexmark printers for as little as $10 without ink! The reason is that the Lexmark has the head as part of thier ink cartridge and that makes the refill very expensive as opposed to a brand that has the head as part of the printer. I recently bought a Canon S200 for less than a color refil for the Lexmark. It was brand new and had both color and black cartridges in it. AND the Canon cartridges are very easy to refill. Lexmark ink cartridges can be refilled but it is a tricky procedure and often does not work more than a few times because the head part develops problems after it is reused too much. I also found that the Lexmark power adapters are a breed of their own and worth as much as the printer if you need to buy one.

Just my $.02

Lexmark printers (especially the Z series) are a waste of space. I had one and I came to the conclusion that it was an excellent paper-weight.

It takes up tooo much space to even be a GOOD paper weight !!

When your holding down hundreds of loose sheets of paper next to an open window the bigger th paper-weight the better.:D

Actually I had a lexmark for a day. It came to me all beat up from a friend. It had leaked ink and wouldn't load paper. I had ink all over my kitchen table from the thing. Thank God that the messy stuff cleans up with water or my wife would of choked me to death. I striped it and fixed so it would load the paper ( had to prop up the paper with a bottle of windex) I ran the thing out of ink with a printing marathon and threw it in the trash when I was done. Real pile of crap it was.

The simple fact is that
ALL printer manufacturers are building and selling their Low end Ink Jet printers for No Profit and or Below manufacturing cost
They Make their Money On the printer accessories ( INK )

The trouble with the Lexmark Z series of printers is not only are they low end they're also second rate.

rick is right that they are virtually giving away printers in order to sell ink..

a few years ago I bought a canon printer (new) for £100 I was asked to take out extended warranty for £70 the print cartridges at the time were £56

a year or so later the same printer (or its equivelant) was £68

the extended warranty was only for the printer (ie: a replacement would not have cartridges) and I would have to pay postage.

I refilled the cartridges myself saving a whole lot of bucks.

the printer was excellent, but eventually (after several years of hard use) wore out the belts. overall it worked out to be a cost effective printer.

I read recently that the cost of ink for the average printer is about 4 or 5 times more expensive than Chanel Perfume.

The cheaper printers look good when you view the price but any ink supplied is usually only enough for a few print jobs (between one third and half full) and you quickly have to pay through the nose for refills. You are usually better of buying a dearer printer (and pricing the cost of refills before actual purchase)

Like Vic I always refill my cartriges for standard printing and have manufacturers ones for special print jobs. There is very little degredation in the quality of printing for average jobs (Letters etc.) Over the past 3-4 years I have saved a fortune. In fact I have saved that much I am going to have to get another buiscut tin for hiding under the bed.

I have resented HP for a long time due to crummy service and such, but I have bought HP printers for the last 2 that I have had because they usually have the lowest price of ink per page printed....

re-filling pretty much takes the cartridge price out of the equation with the type with print head inc. but I have a canon bjc 800 and its cheaper to buy the new cartridges than to fill them.

some of the lower end ones are reknown (lexmark) and you should keep away from them.
