Hi guys
Recently i upgraded to Pentium 4 2.4 GHZ 256 MB DDR RAM, Gigabyte GA81GX Motherboard with Intel extreme graphics on board video, 7200 RPM HDD running WIN98 SE. I am using my old 14 inch Viewsonic E40 monitor. I have set the resolution at 800x600 high color. When i try to increase to 1024x768, the display letters and icons become too small. Pl let me know how to make the system capable of handling higher resolution. Is there anything to be done to increase the V RAM. Pl advise.
Regards. Prakashn.

That's what higher resolution does. Higher than 800 by 600 on a 14inch monitor would be hard to see. either get a larger monitor or you can try this.
right click on desktop -left click on properties- left click on settings- try increasing your dpi to 120- click apply -ok. this might help a little but on a small monitor it still going to be small.

800 x 600 is generally the highest you would want to go a 14" monitor.

I have a 17" LCD, so I have about 18" or 19" of actual screen space and everything is small on my screen at high resolution. On a 14" screen, I would be surprised if you could read it without magnification....

i have a 15" monitor with 1024*768 resolution ....and i m pretty comfortable reading it.

Simply increase the font size. The default windows setting is Small-fonts. Make it Large-fonts and everything will be fine.

...ohh, i just noticed Mark said the same. :p

The difference between viewable area on 14" and 15" monitors can be considerable.

My old 14" monitor gives me a viewable area about the size of a standard (US 8.5" x 11) printer page...for about 93.5 sq inches. The 15" is bigger by around an 1" top and side for about 108 sq inches. Monitors are measured diagonally.

A 17" would have about 139 sq inches and a 19" would have about 178 sq inches of space (almost double the area of the 14").
