This is a problem with one of my friends:

He has an AMD based system(5XX MHz)

When he tries to install windows98, it gives Fatal Exception error message during the installation. Then after restarting, the installation again starts from where it was broken. After a while, again the same error message is displayed. The process continues like this and the Win98 eventually gets installed!
Then again, during running of the Windows the same blue screen starts teasing him.

He is currently away from home and does not remember the Code No. of that error message.

Where does the problem lies?

Well, without some specifics on what the errors are and when they occur, it's hard to say. But my first guess based on what you've said so far is bad memory. If he's using more than one memory module, I'd remove one. If the problems still occur, I'd try the other. If he's only using one, I'd use another if he's got access to it.

If Win98 "Setup.exe" encounters hardware that was not in existence when this O/S was designed and made, then it will be unable to initialise the hardware and setup will stall.
You are expected to switch off, pause for 15 seconds, switch back on and select "Safe recovery".
Setup then skips the offending item of hardware and continues.
If yet another such item of hardware is encountered the process must be repeated until setup completes.
All such hardware will have been skipped and will require up to date driver files installed to enable the hardware.
You are in trouble if the hardware in question happens to be essential for the PC to boot successfully.
