HELP! I'm running ME on a 966 Athlon (Gateway) but the problem is only about 1 month old (no, I don't remember what software I added). Anyway, I use the normal START/SHUT DOWN and the computer goes beyond the tone and blue screen to black but does not shut off. I note that my modem (@home cable modem) is blinking like crazy so I'm sure it's connected. I contacted AT&T and they had be re-start with out loading any items and it shut down just fine... so obviously it is something that is loaded. But when I go into the ctrl-alt-delete and start shutting down programs, the blinking does not stop... and it still will not shut down. My task bar (lower right) has Norton Anti-Virus, Go-Back, In CD (copy program for CD Burner), MS Messenger (I shut this off completely but that didn't help), and HOTSYNC for my Palm. In START UP, the only other items are Calendar and MS Tool bar. I have checked by bootlog but, needless to say, it only shows the current session so I don't know what is failing to shut down. I end up cutting power and going through the safe-mode start up. By the way, if I unplug my modem, it will shut off. I have Norton Anti-Virus up and running (and completely updated) so I am at a loss.

How about trying this: Press the Cont+Alt+Del and see what is running in the background that is perhaps not showing on screen.

Would you post back your findings? Other help could be eating dinner or at the festival right now...but I'm sure they'll be checking in shortly.

Ahh, reread your post and saw you already tried that. Still, others might want to know what's in there.

You could do a System Restore which would take you back in time, hopefully before the problem started and then you could perhaps isolate.

Interesting though, that something must have been isolated by using selective start. Could possible try that. Let's wait and see what other's have to say...there are some pretty heavy hitters here!

I would say that if it shutsdown whe you unplug (power I hope) your mode then that is where the problem lies...before you try to shut down disconnect and power down your modem...

It also seems to me that ME (whether by design or by "bug') has more difficulty terminating an internet connection when shutting down or rebooting than some previous versions of Win9x...

Here (http://definitely) is a list tht covers many of the programs that run at start up and whether they should be disabled and for some, how to do it.
