If I am understanding you correctly, just right click on item and hit delete.

Yeah, if you mean the ones that show up on the left hand side when you click Start then right click and click "Remove from this list"

Sorry for the confuson, but I was speaking of the starup tab under the msconfig utility. I have some files running I dont want started but even though I have unistalled them they still show there. I have them checked off so they will not start. I just want them gone.

I would refer you to www.blackviper.com
He has good stuff on how to get XP set up to run well. The point is you sometimes don't want to use msconfig in XP.

I'm not sure it will work for you, but you could try TweakUI. I know it takes programs out of the Add/Remove Programs listing that have been uninstalled but still show up. Not sure it will for the msconfig screens.

I think the Advanced Mode of Spybot also has an option to remove programs from Startup....

Budfred as usual is 100% right
Main page - click tools- almost at the bottom is system start up. You can stop things from there. I reccomend following the directions of what Spybot wants you to do as far as turning things off.

what about regedit? If I find files in there that are from those programs, do you think that might do it. I am not very good at understanding regedit, just dont want to mess it up. I will try everyones ideas.

You are better off using a utility like Regcleaner if you want to clean up the Registry. If you are not real comfortable with editing the Registry, I wouldn't do it. Even simple mistakes can make things bog down quickly. If you do decide to do it, make sure you back it up first....

If you have truly uninstalled these programs and they have left bits of themselves behind you can of course edit those bits out of the registry if you are happy working in there and know the risks.
Particularly items at:-
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
You can get RegCleaner HERE (http://www.techtv.com/screensavers/downloadoftheday/story/0,24330,3338390,00.html)
