i have just wiped and reformatted a co workers dell dimenson 4100, with a e139761 motherboard w 866 pentium III processor, I have downloaded the driver for at 128 rage pro(pn #1026310914033788) and the driver for creative ct 5807(part#4001061707 revb) and all i get is nothing but the yellow explamation points. listing unknown device, pci communication, sound driver and after i downloaded video drive( and direct x 8) i get a message like video adpater doesn't match. This was supposed to be an easy new install of windows 98 se and it has gone south, Does it have anything to do with going from ME to Window 98?, i am at a loss as too what I need to do from here. I don't have internet access on that comute, I have been downloading files saving to cd then transferring to that computer i am running out of cds, please give me some much need advice, thanks again for your help

HERE (http://www.americas.creative.com/support/files/download2.asp?centric=16&maincat=11&os=2%2C3&subcat=17) should be the correct drivers for the sound card you specified if it is the PCI64 version, and they are small enough to fit on a floppy.
What make of video card is it. Have you gone to the manufacturers site to try and find the correct drivers.
In device manager have you tried 'update driver' and pointing it to the location of the drivers you already have to see if that fixes the problem.
If you are running out of CDs for drvers try using CD-RWs to transport them

Keep in mind that Dell is usually quite proprietary in their components. You may need to find the drivers you need on Dell's website. Do you have a Recovery install disk from Dell with the computer?? The correct drivers are probably on that disk...

the viedo card is an ati rage 128 pro, I actually got the dell disk, but when i go to run it it tells me not enough memory to run close other applications, which i do then tells me cant run at the screen depth i am at, which is the only depth i can get right now, i tried to run the update and went tinto the driver file on the cd but it still has given me no sound, Anything else I can try ?

Is the video card an added feature or is it the one that came with the computer?? If it is added, you may need to pull it and go with onboard video (if it has it) and then add it back later.
It sounds like you may need to start over and reinstall using the recovery disks from Dell. I would zero out the hard drive and then reinstall. If the Dell disk is WinME, you can tweak it to the point that it will run as well as Win98 with some extra features. Wait to follow this suggestion until others respond though, someone may have an easier alternative...

I think the recovery disk is bad or not complete, I went ahead an reformatted anyway because i was having trouble anyway, What if I used either a Gateway or HP recovery disk, Would either one of those fix the problem? Are they swappable?, The dell disk say it can run in Dos, I can't get it to Autorun or to setup, What happens if I pull both the video and sound card and install drivers after I put them back in ? Going on day 2 of this and coworker is of course anxious, thanks for any help I am going to research more on Internet and see if i can find anything else while I wait on everyone's wisdom

You might try going into device manager and deleting every item that has a yellow mark on it and then rebooting to see if windows picks it up and can be directed to the correct drivers.
HERE (http://www.ati.com/support/products/pc/rage128pro/winme/rage128prowinmedrivers.html?type=98&prodType=graphic&prod=productsME98driver&submit.x=14&submit.y=9) should be the list of available drivers for the video card.
If the dell disk isnt running in dos have you made sure that the CD drive is set up in the boot sequence in BIOS.
A HP or Gateway recovery disk would be unlikely to work since there would likely be differences in hardware and setup.
I would likely agree with Budfreds suggesting of zero-fill and reinstall from scratch.

I followed the suggestions, I have reformatted and started over, I actually have sound now, I have downloaded all Direct x drivers i need and drivers for video card, Here is wher i am at now, My bios detects the 4x agp card(rage128 pro) when plug and play runs it sets generic pci vga driver. I tried pointing it to ATI file that had the drivers but something is not letting it, When I run the setup for the driver I get "Display driver not compatable with Display adapter," so My video card isn't being seen by OS, I have some conflicts with pci communication devices and unknown devices errors, What else do I need to check ?

Well I finally found the correct driver on Dell's site, I actually see that suggestion a couple of posts ago, the time I could of saved. I would like to thank you guys for all the previous posts because I actually followed advice i had seen previously . Which was to put in the error message into Google and found the problem and fixed it, so even after not paying attention to previous post but reading this site paid off in the end thanks again for the help.
