Hello,

This problem has been driving me nutz!

This is a new system im building from the ground up (like most of my systems) It consists of:

- New 120gig HD, new motherboard (latest bios), etc...
- In the primary IDE bus I have my Hardrive as a master.
- In the secondary IDE bus I have my CDrom as a master.

In my bios I have boot ide0 first, then floppy, then cdrom. I booted of f my XP pro CD, and it installed fine. The only problem is that I can't boot into XP unless I have the freaking CD in the drive... this is what happens at boot:
A: floppy search,,, no bootloader
C: harddrive search,,, no bootloader
D: cdrom search,,, finds a bootloader.. then loads the OS off my hard drive.

Ive booted into console recovery mode, and tried fixboot, fixmbr, etc..
I've tried every possible cable/jumper/bus combo. Nothing.

My HD is formart like this:
Primary partition 1, NTFS approx. 20gigs.
Primary partition 2, NTFS apprix. 100gigs.

Any help would be great!

Have you tried running the Repair feature from the WinXP CD... Check here (http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm) for more info....

I had the jumper on my HD set to "Master with slave present"

There was no slave present. Removed the jumper, and its fixed!

"Master with slave present"

I haven't heard of that one as a jumper option...

Thanks for posting the solution! :)

I always thought that was on old hdds

I.E.: i have an old W.D. Caviar 3200 (i think thats the model #, made in 96 i think) with that option.
