Ok, got a problem here. When my hard drive started making weird and strange noises, my system locked up and wouldn't boot up. I shut off the system, waited, rebooted and when the system came up, I started having problems.Still making the noise but now, I get "VMM32.VXD file is either corrupt or missing, please reinstall windows". What happened? Also, I tried to use the recovery disk that came with the computer and after inserting the first disk, I got an error message indicating that I need to do a FDISK, which I tried, then got another error message" unable to access disk 1" (this is the main drive). I have tried several times to fix or format the main drive and keep getting the same error messages. How can I fix this problem and also, is it possible that my hard drive is going out on me? These loud noises have never happened before. The computer is a HP Pavilion.

From everything you've said it sounds like your hard drive went out.
if you really want to recover the data you can always buy another drive and install windows on it. When the new drive is setup you can slave the old drive to it and try to access, maybe you'll get lucky.

Thanks for your response, I thought that this might be the case but I wanted to get a second opinion. So, off to the store we go, ho,ho.

I responded in your other thread, but after reading more about what you have done here, I think it is time to plan a funeral for the drive and the data on it. It will be impressive if you can recover anything after the efforts you have made to resurrect it. There are still a couple of tricks that might work and you can certainly pay several hundred dollars if the data is really crucial, but you probably won't be able to just slave it and grab the data....
