Hi,

I recently installed this mobo: MSI 865PE Neo2 L/S and have the following question:

Using the Core center I see that the temp of my NB is always at least 55°c, regardless of the fan setting. This is at idle, at load, the nb temp doesn't change noticably (maybe a 2 or 3° raise during heavy gaming)

Sys temp and cpu temp remain at or about 30-35°C (at idle, about 10° more at load)

Are these temp readings on my NB normal? I wondering if it isn't a bit high compared to the other two and shouldn't it change at load or with different fan setting?

I have a PIV 2.4Ghz proc in there (at stock speed with stock cooling) and a MSI GForce FX5600 (256) and two sticks of 512 ram.

Thx for any insights,

Greetz & have fun

I am sorry to say this, but I don't have a clue what an NB is... If it is your graphics card, they may well run hot, but 55C isn't too bad....

NB = northbridge.

55 C. is about normal I think, but some people add a fan.

Edit: Oops. I see it already has a fan.

The Northbridge chip isn't likely to change much at idle vs full load since it's pretty much active all the time. Still, the temp should change a few degrees when you alter the fan setting. This suggests a "dead zone" in your case cooling scheme centered around your NB.

To aleviate this problem, try fiddling with your case fan positions or even add a case fan (on the side if you can). While 55C isn't deadly for a northbridge like it would be for a CPU, it is nonetheless something that you might want to cool down.

thx for replying all,

NB does indeed mean north bridge, sorry 'bout the confusion.

My current fan setup is like this:

2 fans blowing out in the back, just below the psu at about the same height as the proc & NB
1 fan blowing in at the side at approx the height of my vidcard
1 fan blowing in at the front bottom
1 fan blowing in at the front, installen in a case drive that includes my hdd's
(all 80mm casefans)

The front fans have a dust filter, the side one not yet. Maybe I should take out the side one? I've been thinking now it might disrupt airflow from front/down to back/up hence causing not enough air to be moved. BTW: I have a Truepower psu that regulates the speeds of my fans trough a connection with the mobo and it's doing its job 'cause during intense gaming the fans do speed up as proc / sys temp rises.

The fan currently on the NB is a very small one (50mm I think). Would it be a good idea to replace it with a bigger one or is this a no-no?

The intel spec sheet says my proc can take 74°c, but unfortunatly msi offers no such specs on the mobo. I mailed them with the question but I doubt I'll get any answer soon. Any idea's on where to find them specs would be "cool" ;)

Thx & have fun!

I've recently tried to contact MSI about a video card fan that stopped working. I emailed support about a dozen times over two weeks and only got automated replies. Then I filled out the RMA form on the web site - sent that three times with no answer. Finally called and they mailed me a fan - no problem. Maybe you will get an answer if you call.
