I have just installed DirectX 9.0 After running the directx diagnostic tool I get the following message:
Problem getting extra display info
HResult: 0X8876024e
When I try to test DirectDraw
Failure to create primary surface : 0X8876024e
I'm not able to see any of test graphics normally displayed through the diagnostic tool. Also, it says the 3d accelerator is not available.
My video card is an ATI 3D Expression with 4MB on board memory
I'm running Windows 98
any suggestions would make the sun shine...
It appears that your video card's drivers are not compatible with DirectX 9.0.
Check the card manuf's site for updated drivers.
If there are none or if the new ones do not work either, then consider upgrading your video card.
You can also revert to an earlier version of DX, but I believe that you have to reformat your HD and reinstall Windows in order to do this.

Sorry to say, but there is no way an ancient 4MB video card can keep up with DX9! We're talking about several virtual centuries of graphics advancements! :p Not only does DX9 support pixel & vertex shaders version 2.0, but it also supports many D3D and OpenGL updates and HLSL (high level shading language). I'd be surprised if that old thing could handle DX8.
Unfortunately, video cards have an even shorter lifespan than a CPU, so I think your 4MB video card has outlived its usefulness if you want DX9 support. Why even go to DX9 if your graphics subsystem isn't up to the task?
Becasuse the ****ONLY**** way to patch a major security flaw on anything lower than 2k/XP is to update to DX9.0b........
So if you want to to be secure you need a new vid card....or new OS.

hi jblue, welcome to PCguide forums. :)
You may try the following..
Update your card drivers (http://www.ati.com/support/identify/productname.html)
Uninstall and reinstall directx9 drivers. (http://www.softnews.ro/public/cat/14/4/14-4-40.shtml)
If dx9 doesnt work, u can uninstall and install dx8/7/6/5/4/3/2/1 :D .
but be careful while removing dx9 as there is a possibility tht your system wont start at all and u might end up reinstalling windows. I have tried it zillions of times....successfully. :)
Frankly speaking i really dont understand this "compatibility" thing fully when it comes to directX and Grapchis cards. I installed dx9 on my old pc (intel 810 chipset - winME) and they did improve performance of the game. I have it installed now, on my new pc (geforce 2 - winME/winXP) and so far they havent given any problems..... and i was told by a friend that dx9 arent compatible with either 810chipset or geforce 2 graphics card.

Thanks for your replies...it's hard to face the inevitable truth that age is a factor, even for computer parts and that upgrading is the answer. I was trying to appease my gaming teens, thinking that installing a newer version of direct X would solve their graphics problem, but obviously it hasn't.
