I have an AMD 1.2 running on an MSI board. It won't boot. Windows starts to load, then it either hangs or reboot. The power supply is an ANTEC 300 watt switching power supply. Its about 2 years old. Eventually, the PC powers off and won't power back on untill I unplug it and wait about 10 minutes. All four diagnostic lights on the mother board turn green before the above happens. I don't think the power supply fan is running. The CPU temp is 55C/131F. I've heard of people having similiar problems with AMD CPU's overheating. Should I buy a new power supply first?

Welcome to http://www.pcguide.com/ubb/pcgubb.gif forums.

Have you tried doing a bare bones boot? Just MB/Proc A stick of ram and video card to see if the computer will rebbot even without an OS.

Im not familiar with the temperature range on a 1.2 but the temp does sound a little high. Since it wont boot into windows I presume you are monitoring from within the BIOS? You may want to try removing the heatsink and replacing the current thermal material with something like Arctic Silver (http://www.arcticsilver.com/).

It definitely sounds like it could be a heating issue.

Also if the power supply fan doesnt work you may want replace as it may be adding to system temps. If you have a spare PS lying around you amy want to try that out.

I got the CPU temp from the BIOS setup. If I just leave the computer in BIOS setup, monitoring the CPU temp, it doesn't power down. The CPU temp got up to 136F. As soon as I try to boot, it goes thru system checks and starts to load windows. When Windows starts to load, it will hang or reboot or just power off. If it powers off, I have to unplug it and wait 10 minutes or so. I don't have a PSU laying around, so I will have to buy one. I'll try disconnecting the periphials and taking off some of the ram and see what happens. Thanks.. I'll let you know what happens.

If it goes to 136F while your just sitting in BIOS that is definitely high, and I would reccomend you check the mounting on the heatsink and definitely consider removing it and replacing the old thermal material with Arctic Silver. It certainly sounds more like a thermal issue.

----EDIT----
You might also try taking the side off the case and blowing a desk fan into the machine and seeing what effect that has on temperature.
